Hi Mary G

Yes I take the 100mg daily orally. I had a scan with the probe in my womb which I think might be the type you have and I think the water flush procedure was a camera with a view to taking a biopsy wouldn't like that one too often.

I get the aura migraine but with the headache, I believe they are called focal migraines and that's why I'm on a patch due to less risk.

Hi Hurdity

My diet is fairly good but I don't get any exercise which I know I really need to change.

I will ask the doctor about the thyroid level I never thought about that but I think they may have checked, there were around 30 things tested in the blood tests I'm not even sure what they were all for.

I've just turned 47 and haven't had a regular period for 2 years, I had a short bleed last year which they classed as a post meno bleed.

On the Utro you think that is better than Provera? I didn't experience the hair loss on the Provera but was only on it at the beginning of the hrt and even though it the Utro is described as less Androgenic I've read about medroxyprogesterone being a dht blocker which is the bit that affects the hair follicle but I may be misunderstanding that this is not the same as Provera.

Do you think that it is a hormone imbalance that is causing the hair loss and not specifically the Utro?

If you had 200mg every 12 days out of 28 would that mean a bleed each month?

I would like to say thanks for all the info to you Hurdity, Mary G and Stellajane, I have learnt a lot from you ladies over the last few days and wish I'd joined this forum a few months ago!

End of month two of Utrogestan for first 7 days and oestrogel 2 pumps a day. Am now having a light period. (No period last month). But this period should have started after withdrawal from the Utrogestan at the end of week one shouldn't it? Not in the middle of week 4. Any suggestions as to what is going on and if it's OK?

I agree with Stellajane.  One really needs to be monitored closely if trying to do a lower dosage for fewer days of the Utro or problem bleeding could emerge. I feel so good when taking the Utro I dread coming off it.  However when I tried it continuously I did feel the cumulative effect (sedative/sleepiness) which I didn't like. Dg x

Hi

Does anyone know if there is generally a preferred brand of oestrogen patch? My first prescription was estradot which were really small and the second lot were Evorel.

I know they are supposed to be the same medicine but with other meds I think some brands are better than others and wondered if anyone thought the same with patches.

Trufflecat - if you are peri-menopausal then you can expect a bleed at anytime irrespective of your HRT cycle because your own hormones are coming into play - so no need to worry on that score yet!

Lil L yes if you took 200 mg 12 days per month you would expect a bleed each month provided the oestrogen dose was sufficient to stimulate the womb lining to grow.  All the oestrogen patches contain the same oestrogen - estradiol so there is no difference really - except that as you know Estradot are much smaller. I have only ever used these except for a brief period of Evorel when I first started and these are mahoosive in comparison - I wouldn't want anything that big stuck to me -  only because there is more to worry about keeping stuck down. Maybe the absorption varies slightly between brands and your skin type, but they are all designed to deliver on average the same amount of oestrogen for a given patch size (ie 50 mcg for example should deliver 50 mcg per day whether Evorel or Estradot). Absoprtion will also probably vary more depending on where on your body you apply the patch.

Thanks Hurdity I've just got all the letters together for blood tests tomorrow and looking back the hrt doctor wrote to the gp specifically mentioning estradot. I think I would prefer those to the Evorel they do seem less of a nuisance. Will have to see what happens I'm in a bit of a dilemma if given the choice about having the progesterone for 12 days and having a bleed. I was just getting used to not having periods but if it could mean better hair it's a no brainer x

Btw Lil L you asked some Qs about hair further back down the thread below but really I know very little about it - Stellajane's your expert here! Only that there are different degrees of how androgenic the progestogens are (with those closest to Testosterone most likely leading to more hair loss), rather than physiologically how they actually work. I'm sure you've seen this:

Progestogens which can be used cyclically are of 3 main types:

Testosterone derived - Norgestrel, Norethisterone acetate and Levonorgestrel.
Less testosterone related - Medroxyprogesterone acetate(MPA).
Least testosterone related - Dydrogesterone and Micronised progesterone (Utrogestan).

Side effects are often experienced during the progestogen phase of treatment and can be reduced by using a product containing a different type or route of progestogen.

Your situation may be very specific to you and involve other factors.

Hi Hurdity thanks yes I have read that list somewhere before and on a couple of other sites I think one was on a NZ website where the specialist recommended Utro.

It is difficult to tell if it is the Utro that's causing the problem or as some of the members suggest insufficient oestrogen. All I know so far is that on the Provera which was at the beginning I didn't see hair loss until swapping to the Utro but again it may take time for problems to become apparent.

I've asked the hair doc if he could research this for my appointment next week as to whether he thinks Provera or Utro would be best for me, I know he wanted me to go on Femoston which contains the medroxyprogesterone but I couldn't use that.

I think it could be specific to me and maybe just bad luck that I'm that 1 in so many 100 or 1000 that possibly the Utro doesn't suit, it does list hair loss as a side effect even though everything on the web seems not to point towards this. Or as suggested maybe try the short cycle of progesterone, I do think it is going to be a case of try and see.

I was just hoping that someone with my type of hair loss might be a member of the forum but perhaps it isn't as common as I thought xx

Thanks Stellajane, I see about the Femoston. I'm finally seeing hair doctor tomorrow so see what he says. I think I'm losing less hair in the shower over the last couple of days but you've just hit the nail on the head, I'm seeing more lost hairs around the house etc I do unfortunately think it is an individual response to the Utrogestan which just my luck as it seems to be better for me in other ways. I had terrible joint pain on the Provera.

Hello I'm sorry to say I'm feeling really depressed. Please can anyone help saw hair doctor who amongst some recommendations advised spironolactone for high blood pressure but GP won't prescribe it. She has prescribed Lisinopril which seems to be widely talked about on the Internet as causing hair loss! Can anyone recommend a bp medicine that isn't know to cause hair loss?

I think I'll speak to GP and ask if we can hang fire on the bp meds and see if I can get it down with exercise and diet.

The hair doctor thinks my hair is virtually the same as last November or fractionally thinner at the front. He has prescribed a different type of minoxidil using another base which he thinks will be better tolerated. He said that your hair sheds November/December and again in Spring time which is perhaps part of what I'm seeing. He still couldn't comment on the Utro but suggested as Stellajane that if my instincts are telling me the Utro is contributing go back on the Provera and see what happens.
