I was prescribed 100mg everyday but planned to take it for the 25 days.
I couldn't tolerate taking it and gave up after 6 days!

Horrendous vivid dreams that woke me up several times each night and when that wasn't happening I felt wired up and couldn't sleep.

It also made me feel incredibly hot at night, I had to keep moving around the bed to find a cool spot. Although I am nearly a year since last period I have not had hot flushes yet and since stopping it I now need my hot water bottle at night again! So the utrogestan must have been the cause of that.

I just couldn't continue, maybe it might have improved but I felt unsafe driving I was so tired and I have a 50 minute drive each morning .

I'm in no doubt that Utrogestan (and all the synthetic progestins) is the achilles heel of HRT and has some strange side effects and I cannot take it for very long.  Stellajane, I can relate to what you are saying about it taking a few days to flush out of your system before the bleed and I think it hangs around in your body for longer than it says in the instuctions.

If you are happy with HRT but hate the Utrogestan part and it is ruining your life, my advice is this.  Try taking 100mg Utrogestan vaginally for 7 days, and then go and have a scan immediately after your period.  I know it's difficult to arrange, you will probably have to pay for it and you will have to book it well in advance but it is the only way you will ever know if you are taking the right amount.  I did it recently and my lining measurement was only 2mm so it must be working in my case but I realise everyone is different and of course this dose might not be enough for some women but at least you will know.  It might sound radical but what else can you do?  I had no choice because I can't take any more Utrogestan than I do now so if it didn't work, the next step for me would be a hysterectomy.

The estrogel and the urogesteran is to override my cycle to give my bladder a chance to heal. As anyone had success with a continuous regime

I have just been prescribed 1mg estradiol gel in a sachet daily and 200mg utogestan daily. I saw a women's health specialist and she was adamant I needed to take both daily. I'm 55 post menopause last period about 3 years ago. Ita very early days with me for HRT. Having read all the posts on the forum I was wondering why she didn't say I could take less utrogestan, especially as my symptoms are very emotional based.
Guess I will have to trial it. Anything must be better from the disarray my life has been for years.

Yes that is a high dose of utrogestan - it is twice the licensed dose for that amount of gel so maybe start with 100 mg although some women get spotting on this dose if they absorb the gel really well. Maybe the higher dose she has given to start with as you are post-meno and your body not used to oestrogen - breakthrough bleeding can be heavier at the start of HRT - even on continuous combined HRT - until the body acclimatises and the progesterone does its job in keeping the lining thin

I completed 12 days of  Utrogestan 100 vaginally 4 days ago. (after 5 weeks of 25 mcg patch). A day ago I got a mild forehead headache and tender bosoms and then last night  bleeding started, full in straight away. Has been heavy today. Heavier than i would have  thought given the dose of my patch. It's good that the Utro is doing its job but is there a possibility it's taking away more than the lining?? I feel like I'm going to bleed to death. Ok, drama queen I know but the Provera I took in December didn't give this much blood and it's supposed to be stronger. I feel quite grotty too today.  Words of comfort/reassurance needed ......

Hurdity I saw Dr Annie Evans in Cornwall, and she has prescribed 200mg utrogestan I have it in a capsule. She said she wants me to stay on for 3 months if possible.

That's very reassuring Stellajane - thanks. I went to bed last night wondering if I'd wake in a pool of blood. With the Provera it started very slowly (brownish)for 2 days, then dark red normal flow for a few days then ended like the start. The bright red and very liquid is quite scary - full on straight away. I'm pleased to say it has eased up a bit over night. What regime do you use with Utro? Thank you again.

I'll try to keep a long story short! Two years post meno; started Evorel conti last summer (half a patch or less) after couple of months felt the progesterone was negating the oestrogen positives plus I was concerned about the implications of constant oestrogen and progesterone. I had no breakthrough bleeding at all.

Saw a gynae in October who prescribed Provera every 3 months to clear the womb lining. It was a high dose and I chickened out - I took a lower dose after about 7 weeks. I wasn't too bad on it but found I was increasingly 'wired up' and it seemed to take ages to get it out of my system.

So in January five weeks had passed on oestrogen only and I knew I had to sort out something in the way of progesterone. I had some Utrogestan from Spain and thought I'd bite the bullet and take it which I did vaginally. I felt fine on it although towards the last couple of days of it I felt a bit strange.

And here I am now. Four full days before the bleed. I do feel it's been less aggressive than the Provera but quite different. I'm now toying with trying a similar regime to you ie 12 days every 2 months (I would take 100mg) or 7 days every month. I was hoping that my low dose of oestrogen might give a minimal/zero bleed on the shorter cycle, but judging by what other ladies say, it looks highly unlikely!

I must say I'm almost up to here with hrt - if it's not inserting a tablet, it's putting up with a bleed. I don't like it however I'm prepared to persevere until the summer and then I might try to go without.

One thing with the Utro, this might sound bizarre but I found it completely dampened my libido; now whether this was psychologically because I was using it vaginally I don't know. I will wait till after this bleed to see what happens as I'm certainly not interested in it at the moment!!

Sunnydays, I know how you feel!  Utrogestan does dampen libido and mood and that is one of the many reasons I limit the use of it.

I also think is more powerful than you might think when taken vaginally.  I have never had the scanty bleed that Professor Studd mentions either, it is always heavy although less so since I reduced my dose of oestrogen from 3 pumps of gel to 2.

I am currently taking 100mg of Utrogestan for 7 days each month and I am on a fairly high dose of oestrogen and I just had a lining thickness reading of 2mm.  I have no intention of doing so but if I increased my dose of Utrogestan, I might end up stripping the whole womb away, there would be nothing left!
