Nystatin alternatives?
« on: September 20, 2025, 05:32:27 PM »

Is there anyone who can advise me on whether there are any alternatives in the UK to vaginal nystatin pessaries please?

I have .. azole resistant Candida Krusei which is driving me mad and no doctor seems to know what to prescribe .. the nystatin is no longer available and I don’t know what to do next … GP has given me
Econazole but when I looked it up it said that wouldn’t help at all …

Thank you :-)

Sorry Nas - I meant to say, it’s a fluconazole resistant strain which is why the 6 month course I had hasn’t worked …

Ah okay,  Damm, that’s a nuisance. Have the medics come
up with any alternative for you?
Natural yoghurt? Tea tree oil?

Well that’s the strange thing - the lab report came up with nystatin pessaries but it’s impossible to get them.  They didn’t offer an alternative but my GP suggested Econazole but as far as I can find out it’s resistant to that one too - in fact any of the … azole family.

I see. What is it, intense thrush, which won’t resolve? There HAS to be a remedy, surely. Have gynae any thoughts?

My urologist contacted a gynaecologist for me who also suggested the elusive nystatin pessaries … I’m going to go back to him tomorrow and ask for another suggestion - I’ll try to call my gynaecology dept on Tuesday when the one who’s been seeing me is in. If feels like normal thrush - burning and itching but is resistant to most known treatments.  But like you say there HAS to be something! I can’t be the only one in this situation!

Is it sensitive to griseofulvin and if so can you access this?

I would also make sure you have been tested for diabetes and that your vagina is well estrogenised.

You can get Nystatin pessaries from Consultants at some hospitals. You can also order them online from a German pharmacy and they take a few days to arrive.

Thank you Bombsh311 - the only option they came up with was Nystatin so I’ve no idea what else it might be sensitive to unfortunately .. they were asked to do culture & sensitivities though.  I am diabetic but in remission as my blood sugars are within normal range - yay! I am using vagifem internally and estrogen cream as well as patches.

Thank you so much Donna-Paul - I did wonder if it might be available at a hospital which is probably why my consultant says he has prescribed it in the past - he probably didn’t know it’s not used in primary care anymore.  I’ll ask him tomorrow if he can get some for me :-)

I believe there are certain medication that GP's can't precribe and only consultants and hospital pharmacies can.

Remember this from past treatment and having to contact consultants secretary when I required more.

So am sure tomorrow and seeing consultant will enlighten you.

Good  luck

Thank you.  I’m now thinking this is the case.  The lab said Nystatin but My GP spoke to a specialist pharmacist who recommended Econazole but the read up on that for C.Krusei isn’t very promising but maybe I should give it a go - then he can’t blame me if I source something else.
