My 73 year old mum started HRT - the changes are amazing
« on: December 10, 2023, 07:52:29 PM »

Hello ladies, I wanted to share something wonderful.

My 73 year old mum has had painful knee arthritis for years (one knee being particularly worrying). As I am constantly researching because of my own perimenopause and have repeatedly read about the connection between arthritis/joint problems and hormones, I inspired my mum to make an appointment with her gynaecologist and ask about the possibilty of HRT even at her age. To be honest, we both didn't expect that he would support the idea of starting her on HRT at 73...

But her doctor's reaction was so heartwarming! He praised her for her out-of-the-box thinking and prescribed HRT immediately!
Now my mum has been taking her tablets for 2 months and I can report the following:
1. She feels perfect and sleeps like a baby after years of sleep issues
2. Her voice, which got quite coarse with age, has now become much softer and more feminine! The difference is really stunning.
3. And the best thing: the one very problematic knee, which had been very painful and inflamed for years, improved hugely! It is more flexible and less painful every day!

She is totally thrilled (and me with her).  The only thing that worries me a bit is that the doctor is a fan of modern synthetic combination tablets and has prescribed her oral HRT pill  (combination of Dienogest and Estradiol Valerate). I would sleep more soundly if she took natural oral progesterone and dermal oestrogen. So I suggested that at her next consultation she should ask him to change her prescription to a safer version.

My mom took HRT during her Perimenopause in the 90's, but at some point after a few years her doctor stopped the therapy - as most doctors did back then. So this HRT is not her very first experience. She has absolutely no side effects and only feels the benefits (I knock on wood and really hope it stays that way!).

Of course I will be grateful for any suggestions regarding the synthetic HRT and switching to the bodyidentical form...

Lucy

I'd be inclined to leave well alone, it's not often to get the right HRT straight away and feel so well without side effects. Changing might undo all of that.

I am over 70 and would not want to start systemic HRT because of the minefield it can be, I am prepared to put up with the aches and pains that come with old age because I don’t want to go through all of the ups and downs of taking HRT, and believe me for a lot of women it is not an easy ride.
If your mum is doing so well on the HRT she is being prescribed then stick with what you know works.

If it ain't broke don't try to alter anything!

Well done both of you  :medal: as well as the Medic who didn't hesitate.

That's fantastic! While it works, stick with it. ;)
I'm on Oestrogel and Utrogestan but can't cope, but was ok with synthetic OC pills when younger.
Lucy - Would you mind sharing the brand of the pill?

Great news for your mum Luculka.  Can you tell me if Velbienne is just one tablet, like tibolone?  I know you sent the link but wondered if you could give me the basics about it?

Thanks for that.  I'll look into the link when I am less bleary eyed.  It sounds more straightforward than oestrogen, progesterone combination.  I'm 65 and feel I need something besides local hrt. I tried Tibolone a few years ago which is one tablet but it caused bleeding which put me off.

Great news great advice!! Just to say perhaps leave well alone.  I was on tablet and I did like it I must say but because I’m now over 60 I changed to skin but I think I have a thyroid issue thrown in and oral supposed to be contraindicated🤷‍♀️
Always good to read positive posts🌻🌻

I believe that if a link is selling a product it will be removed - one is allowed to mention the product so that Members can do their own research.

Hi Ladies, thank you all for your lovely and helpful comments, I appreciate it very much!
I didn't realise that posting links is not allowed, so my answers were removed.
I have forwarded all your comments to my mum and she feels very encouraged to stick with her successful pill now:-)
Suzy,I am not sure if you saw my posting before it dissapeared, so to answer your question again - yes, my mom is only taking one pill.
