Hrt & sun sensitivity
« on: June 04, 2021, 08:02:10 AM »

I am starting my third week on HRT patches- evorel sequi

This past week it’s been gloriously sunny, our one week of summer in Scotland. I had on factor 50+ Suncream. Brand new so in date and I burned. I never burn wearing suncream. I rarely burn without it. I tried another 50+ /5star suncream and I burned again.  I can’t always be in the shade with young kids but I do try to stay out of the sun as much as possible.

The only difference I can think is that the HRT patches cause some kind of sun sensitivity. I need to not burn due to another medication I take which gives me an increased risk of skin cancer so I’m always particularly careful & this freaked me out.

Has anyone else found that HRT caused them sun sensitivity?

I’m putting mine down to low Estrogen because of all the other symptoms I have. It’s difficult to know.

Some antidepressant medication causes a reaction and when I was undergoing radiation treatment I had to stay out of the sunshine, Oncologist recommended a wide brimmed straw hat !  I would be concerned if a medication put me at risk of skin cancer  :-\

A lady under going treatment at the same time and I would have hat decorating contests - every week she would win, being Jamiacan she had lots of dried fruits etc. to hang round the brim.   8)

If anyone is interested, there is an excellent sunscreen called Altruist. Developed by a dermatologist. If you do a search for it you'll see why it is called that  ;)

I too am used to wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat and factor 50 on warmer days as I'm on AD's and HRT.  ::)

My AD increased sun sensitivity, so I tan at the merest hint of sunshine. Since I've added the HRT this has increased big-style. Of course since I generally have just face, neck and hands on show I end up with those bits ridiculously dark whilst everything else is pale. Basically the opposite of what I'd want, especially since I've always preferred  the 'English Rose' look for myself, if not necessarily others. Tanned body and lighter face would be OK, but not the other way around.  ;D

OP, sorry that you burned. I guess hats and loose, light clothing in addition to the factor 50 are all you can do. All sunscreens aren't necessarily equal, and I find the sun gets through most of them, although the Korean brands like Yesstyle's 'Sunprise' is really, really good, presumably as the culture  seems to favour fair skin over tanned.

Just seen JoaniePat's reply. Will probably give Altruist a whirl as that sounds good too.

Let us know how you get on!

My son is very fair skinned and the only sunscreen that stops him burning is Riemann P20 Sunscreen Spf 50. It can stain clothes if not really careful/

Hi Obobal, I am on Evorel Sequi patches and I thought I was tanning/burning quicker.

I have a good friend who is a real environmentalist and he reminded me our Ozone is at it's thinnest in May/June and this is why we burn quicker....just a thought. But I too feel I now catch the sun quicker.

Are your patches sticking ok? I have just posted mine WILL NOT STICK since weather has heated up.

Thank you,  Primrose

Thanks all.
I’m not on anti depressants and any other medication I’m on doesn’t have sun sensitivity as a side effect and hasn’t caused me to burn in previous years.

I use the same suncream that was prescribed to my kids who are allergic (although I bought mine myself) and have been using the brand since 2012

I did wear a big bucket hat for most of the day but I get very sweaty and didn’t want to have dripping wet hair when I went to visit a relative for dinner & took it off & sat in the shade.
