Period due middle of holiday - on hrt.
« on: January 27, 2018, 10:38:11 AM »

Hi There,
First post so excuse me if this has already been answered elsewhere.
On Evorel Sequi (third cycle in) and have calculated my period will come in the middle of our holiday in July. Last month I got it shortly after applying patch six, which is the second of the four combined progesterone ones. I guess this is about the right time?
Don't want to leave it till the actual holiday to deal with it by continuing with oestrogen only patches in case it doesn't work or it makes me feel unwell, so I wonder it if would be ok to just drop the last combined patch in the pack for the next few months - as long as I've started/had my period? That way I can move it gradually.
Sure others have been in this situation and would appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks 😊

Hi and welcome to MM

Technically, with sequential HRT ( as you are using), the period like bleed should happen a day or two after you finish the combined oestrogen with progesterone patches - so when you are back on the oestrogen only patches. It's called a ‘withdrawal' bleed because you have withdrawn/stopped the progesterone and this triggers the shedding of the womb lining.

It is early days for you and the HRT clearly hasn't taken control of your cycle yet - perhaps your own hormones are breaking through a bit at this stage. Sometimes patches don't stick that well so are not absorbing as they should, this can throw the hormones levels off and cause breakthrough bleeding at odd times.  The problem with mucking about with how you use theses patches is that your body may not respond that well and you get further problems.  Hopefully over the next 2-3 months your cycle will be under control and the bleed will arrive when it should. If, by May/June time, it still looks as though the bleed will arrive on holiday - get back to us and we may be able to advice a strategy to delay it by a week.  DG x

Thanks for this! I will sit tight for a couple of months then. Haven't had any patches fall off or anything so hopefully they're sticking on ok.
Just worrying myself sick over the holiday already, as it'll be 40 degree heat in a resort and I'll be walking around in trousers, having to make up an excuse to my 12 yr old boy on why Mum doesn't go in the pool. Same happened last year and the holiday was a waste of money for me... looked a complete idiot too!
Thanks again. xx

Loose flowing skirts are the thing to wear in the heat. Hopefully the cycle will settle and your bleeds may reduce as well as the HRT take control.
Out of interest, why did you go for the patches? They are medium dose and if you are in early peri meno then it might have been better to start on a lower dose?  As long as your flushes are reduced, then I'm sure all is fine.
If your bleed isn't too heavy, you can use a tampon and still go in the water. DG x

On patches due to being a migraine sufferer since my teens...
Sadly tampons are not an option as unable to use due to both a cystocele & rectocele sustained during childbirth. ☹️

I see - yes,  patches are your best option.  Try not to worry about you holiday just yet. Hopefully your bleeds will be regular by then and you'll know where you stand.   DG x

Kazzyp - where are you applying your patches? There is no need to wear trousers in 40 deg heat unless you're wearing them on your legs below shorts line?! Short skirts should be fine too if you're worried about pads showing. Also you can get these 50's style cossies/bikini bottoms (well you could a few years back) with a sort of frill thing round which may well cover any bulging from pads - just in case! Sorry a bit off topic but relevant to your situation maybe?

😂 It's not to do with the patches showing - it's the pad & flooding thing. I have to use super plus long or sometimes even night pads 😞 and shorts would be the only thing I would feel safe (ish) in, aside from trousers.
I will keep everything crossed that it all settles and my bleeds start to come at the proper time, because then there won't be a problem. x
