premature menopause
« on: January 07, 2016, 04:45:09 PM »

Hi everyone.  Im 29 years old and have just been told by my doctors that they think im going through premature menopause.  Luckily I have a child already but found out I may be having premature menopause when I was having trouble conceiving again.  I am finding it really hard to take everything in and feel really upset about the whole thing.  I also feel really alone as I dont know anyone else who has experienced this and my mum hasn't even started yet. Ive been prescribed hrt bit feel really anxious about starting these. Can anyone offer me any advice.  I would love to speak to someone in a similar situation.  X

Hi and welcome to MEmmaL
You poor thing, what a shock.  I had an early menopause in my mid 30s so I do understand.  HRT is essential to protect your long term health as oestrogen deficiency can result in many health problems including heart disease and osteoporosis. It can take a bit of trial and error till you find the right balance and type of HRT but at your age it is essential. There is plenty of info on this site about premature meno and there is another site that is specifically for POF called daisy network.
Do start the HRT - what have you been given?

Hi Emma - welcome from me too.  :)

I agree with all that Dancinggirl has said. I wondered if you have contacted The Daisy Network which specialise in premature menopause or Premature Ovarian Insufficiency as it is also called? I think that you do have to pay to become a member but you can read about it on their site before joining https://www.daisynetwork.org.uk/

We are here to support you - you wont feel so alone now.

Hi Emma L  :welcomemm:

Sorry to hear about this - you are younger than my daughter who hasn't had children yet....How did the docs decide you were going through a premature menopause? Have you skipped quite a few periods and had blood tests?  Have you started experiencing menopausal symptoms too? As the others have said you really need to take oestrogen at least until the average age of menopause of 51. I hope you manage to find the help and support you need.

Thanks ladies. Nice knowing theres people to talk to.  Ive been prescribed elleste duet 2mg. They had initially put me on the pill so they want me to finish the pack (even though im only on day 2!) then start the hrt. What worries me most is how my body will react to the hrt and what side affects I will have. I came off the pill in march last year as we were trying for another baby. I went to my gp in October time as I hadnt had a period since coming off the pill. They did blood tests and it showed my hormone (I think) levels were high so thought it was menopause and referred me to hospital.  Did more tests and same results.

The Daisy network is great well it used to be when I was a member, there are still def options should you want another child...but as others have said HRT is vital, I can highly recommend the gel which you rub on and the Utrogestan as you are going to need to be on HRT for over 20 yrs so these 2 are really "user friendly" aka bio identical as opposed to others which are maybe more synthetic so to speak.  I went through just under 40 also far too young but without this combination would not have been able to cope. Plenty of help out there, all the best.

Emma L - The blood tests will have shown a high FSH level and probably low oestrogen. If you have been fine on the Pill then I wouldn't worry about side effects on HRT - HRT should actually make you feel better.  Elleste Duet is the one they always tend to try first but if you find it doesn't suit you then there are others to try.
Do go ahead with the HRT as they have suggested - finish this months pack of the Pill then start the Elleste.
Don't be nervous - you will find something that suits you and keeps you healthy. It's worth looking under TREATMENTS above to see your options but you should give Elleste a good 3 month trial to allow everything to settle - you may find it all settles quite quickly.
I'm sure it is tough going to terms with this at such a young age.  Keep posting  DG x

Emma, I'm so sorry to hear your news, what a horrible shock for you.  I started at 35 which was bad enough though I wasn't diagnosed till last year (now 40).  I was quite upset when I first found out and was really shaky and tearful, but once I'd got my head round it and read up on it a bit, I did adjust to it.  I don't think any woman feels ready for this though, especially when it happens so early.

Don't worry about taking HRT - it's really no different to BCP, just a question of finding the right one for you.

There is loads of support on this site - have a look round at what is available.  Once you adjust to what is happening it will feel more manageable and less scary!  Also, as others have suggested, the Daisy Network is good for women your age - I've been fortunate in that my best friend is also going through early meno, but if I didn't know anyone else my age, I'd definitely be looking at the network for support.

Hi Emma

I know exactly how you feel I am 37 was diagnosed last January but told my blood tests I had over 3 years ago were abnormal my fsh level was post menopausal then but not picked up on.

I have not had any children and have found it all upsetting and hard to deal with. So if u would like to talk at all I am here 😀

I am still totally baffled by it all.

I had problems getting pregnant first & second time. First time due to high prolactin levels & second because I wasn't ovulating. I assume all those tests will have been done.

I understand how devastated you must be feeling, having had same feelings myself.

I was lucky & had two children, but I have every sympathy with those who desperately want them & can't. Life can be so cruel.

What a dreadful shock for you. But you have come to the right place for excellent advice and support for HRT.

My cousin was only 28 when she was told she was menopausal. Thankfully she already had 2 DCs but would have dearly loved a third. This was quite a few years ago so she wasn't prescribed HRT by her nervous GP. Her bones have suffered as a result. She is now on HRT which is good news. Her Mum was menopausal by her mid 30s but didn't think to mention it to her daughter as she didn't realise it could be passed down.

Is Emma L still in this forum? If so I would like to hear your story and maybe get some advice. I'm currently 22 and was diagnosed as menopausal at 20. I've struggled ever since, doctors don't seem to want to help me either, with anxiety or low mood, don't know what to do.

Hi SS1995

 :welcomemm:

Sorry to hear about your premature menopause nand I hope you are receiving specialist advice and hormonal support. There is information on this about POI as it is also known: https://www.menopausematters.co.uk/prematuremenopause.php and the tabs above also have information. There is also the Daisy Network which has information and support.

Why not introduce yourslef on the new members section where more people will see your post and welcome you - and hopefully others in your position might see and respond. Emma L hasn't logged into the forum since November 2016 and unfortunately she has not made enough posts to respond to messages - you need to have made 10 to send messages although you can receive them.

I hope you get some help and support, but do post on here (in new members) and see if you are able make contact with someone else if you can.

Hi SS! Sorry for having meno so young! I'm older than you but I can understand your feeling. Try to find a gyn and an endocrinologist who knows and cares. It's important to have HRT for your health and to give time to your body to adjust. I was in panic and I think that I was in despair. Forum helps a lot. 🌹
