Femoston and bleeds
« on: January 06, 2018, 07:09:37 PM »

Hello everyone! On Femoston 2.10 for about 6 months after being on Femoston 1.10 for about a year. Most of the time I don't get bleeds. Not sure why. Occasionally I do and sometimes go on for more than a week. Period also painful. Thought I was through with that!  I'm thinking its OK but wonder why its only rarely. Thank you for any thoughts

You are on a sequential HRT which will normally give a monthly bleed - but not for everyone.   If you don't get a bleed, then this will mean the lining hasn't build up enough.  These bleeds are necessary to ensure the womb lining is shed properly and you don't develop womb cancer. If you are post menopause ( so, when not on HRT, you have been without a period for all least a year or you are over 54) then you could move to a continuous HRt and this should result in a non bleed HRT regime.  DG x

Thank you, really helpful. If I don't generally get a bleed, is that concerning, then?
And do most women swap at some stage to the alternative form for post meno women? Do we need to be off hrt for a year to be sure?

I only had one period in about 6 months before starting hrt at 48.

Thanks! Love this forum  :)

I wouldn't worry about not bleeding. I wouldn't be in a hurry to change to a continuous HRT either - conti HRt can be more problematic.  If you are feeling good on what you are on, then stick with it.  If in your mid 50s you want to take a break to see how you feel, then that may be a good idea.
If you had a period 6 months before you started HRT then you are deemed peri menopause so need a sequential HRT and the peri stage can actually last several years with periods stopping and starting - long gaps between periods, longer or heavier or lighter periods etc.  - everyone is different but it's not unusual to start getting peri symptoms from our mid 40s and the average age for going into post meno is between 52-55 I believe.

If you should develop heavy or erratic bleeding then get this checked but ‘if a things Ok, leave it be' is my moto.

I agree with Dancinggirl about keeping with a cycle - I still have one in my 60's!

However if you feel good all the time on the HRT including the combi part you might want to experiment with continuous combined HRT to see if you continue to be bleed-free - if this is what you want? However the problem is that Femoston continuous combined does not come any higher than  1 mg and the only 2 mg combi products contain other progestogens which some women may be sensitive to. Therefore if you wanted to try a continuouis combined HRT at 2 mg I would suggest you switch to a cyclical one of the same type ( eg Elleste Duet 2 mg before Elleste Duet conti) to see how you get on with the progestogen.

Just to add also that usually if women start HRT before they are menopausal the doc can switch you to continuous combined at age 54 which is when 80% of women have reached menopause (the average age is around 51/52). However some docs will try a switch earlier (depending on what you want to do) but if there is problematic sporadic bleeding then it's too early for continuous combined HRT and so switch back. You don't need to stop HRT for a year! The longest (and only time) I stopped (after starting HRT at just under 54 years) was 3 months at about 58 and that was enough!

What Dancinggirl says is very sensibile though - once you start to change things you may well end up feeling worse - the mantra on here is often as she says "If it isn't broke then don't try to fix it!"
