I thought theworst of the menopause was overbut apparently the urine infections that antibiotics were having no effect on at all may not be infections but the result of low estrogen. Is this common? Have others been treated successfully for this? Feeling very low at the moment.

VERY common and your GP/Practice Nurse should be fully aware  .  The initial urine sample MUST be sent to a Lab. as dip sticks do NOT show infection.  If necessary an Anti-biotic is prescribed however, for most ladies it turns out that vaginal atrophy mimics urine infection-type symptoms  fortunately my GP was on the ball and recommended treatment.

Have a look at 'my bladder etc.' thread and do a search for vaginal atrophy.  Treatment can be successful but most be continued for years and years and

Thank you so much for this. The antibiotics I have had so far made me feel lousy- which I could put up with if they were working!!

Did your GP send the urine sample to a Lab.?

Go have a chat with the Practice Nurse/GP and ask for vaginal atrophy treatment

Yes this time she did.Results tomorrow.

Hopefully you don't have an infection  and treatment for vaginal atrophy can be started.  In the mean time, maybe take a pain relief to ease that irritated bladder feeling and do read the threads about atrophy on here

I have a teaspoon of d mannose with half a fresh lemon , in a glass of warm boiled water and hour before breakfast.

I use the NOW brand as suggested by a specialist via Amazon.

Tests back with no infection so I think it sounds like VA.Will make appt to speak to GP. What meds are effective for this please? If interested does it come and go or just get worse? So grateful for advice/ experiences. Many thanks. J

Local oestrogen....and only gets worse if left untreated, and treatments for life.

Have a look at 'my bladder etc.' thread and do a search for vaginal atrophy.  Your GP should have prescribed treatment once those results show no evidence of infection  give the Surgery a ring in the morning and ask for either Vagifem or Ovestin and impress that you don't want to wait!

Well two weeks of Vagifem had a great effect on my symptoms but now I have been off it for two days they are starting to return. Is this usual? What happens when I come to the end of the twice weekly dosage? Do GPs usually prescribe another course? I cannot go back to how it was before!

You shouldn't be off it Jemp.
You should do the one night a week for a fortnight dose then x2 a week forever.
VA doesn't go away

I am now on the twice weekly dose but my symptoms have returned. I have made an appt to see my GP to ask if I can go back on the daily dose for a couple of weeks as it is my daughters wedding soon and I cannot bear to be like this on around that time.
