I was just thinking that talking about your concerns to your friend may be a helpful thing for both of you, she would certainly understand your worries and it may give her the opportunity to speak more about her own situation.
A long time ago my aunt was in hospital and was told she would probably need an operation, she was terrified and all visitors were under instruction not to talk about it for fear of upsetting her. She was very close to my mother (her sister) and during one visit my aunt waited until my uncle had left the ward to have a cigarette before she broke down and told my mum that she was desperate to talk about her treatment because it scared her so much! She went on to have the operation without problems.
I hope that if you do visit your friend that you both feel better for seeing each other. Comfort and support is what friends are for.
