Have you kept a food diary to see if there is a link between your heart rate and diet?  I have found I am much less tolerant of certain foods now, particularly caffeine and sugar, which can cause my heart to race.

I cut out caffeine and chocolate just over a year ago to try to stop the palpitations.  I never thought about sugar causing them and now I think about it the last two times it happened I had eaten quite a lot of sugary foods.  I will keep an eye on that :)

I don't like very sugary things and usually cut the sugar down in cakes I make at home.  But last week a friend gave me a cupcake with really thick, sweet icing on top and after, my heart was racing so fast the beats almost ran together!  Went on for hours.   :(

Dorothy, I have noticed something similar too. If I have a sugar glut it really disagrees with me. My heart races and my face starts to sweat a little bit. Also get adrenal surges too.

Never really used to happen.

Toffeecushion, thanks for sharing your experience with your heart scares and A&E. I ended up in Hospital last January with chest pains. It came from nowhere and I was kept in. I had just lost my Father - and I have heard that this can trigger heart problems, so I put it down to that. But colleagues just looked at me like I was a liability. Like what is she going to suffer from next. That has been my journey in menopause. Things flying at me from all angles.

Thank goodness for this blog and all of you

Love Sally G

SallyG, it sounds as if your colleagues have never experienced bereavement or they wouldn't be so unsympathetic.  So sorry you have had to cope with their attitudes on top of everything else.  Chest pain is a very common symptom following bereavement (I had it for several weeks after my father died) but the stress of bereavement can also trigger heart problems so it is always a good idea to check it is nothing serious.  You did the right & sensible thing by getting it looked at.

Dorothy, yes one colleague in particular has been like a robot - but actually I've subsequently found out has been through a lot. Some people just can't demonstrate sympathy. I am also glad I checked in to hospital and had thorough tests for two days. It was the start of things menopause.
Hugs to you

My doctor insists anxiety is not a menopause symptom - she says as you get older you just get 'more like what you are'.   I have to admit I have always been a glass half empty person and a real worrier, so perhaps she is right.   But I had major panic attacks out of the blue last year - and I think they are related to hot flushes.  Either they have gone or I have learned how to control them, as I haven't had one for a while.

I sympathise with all of you going through 'body breakdown'.  My OH actually looks better the older he gets, which is really annoying as I have just got bits dropping off!

rebelyell, your GP needs to read up on research about the menopause. With hormone depletion being a huge factor, the adrenaline hormone cortisol becomes more dominant and hence we feel anxious. It is a very common symptom of menopause. Its good to know I can come on here and rant and get supportxxx

I have read a lot of research on HRT and time and again it mentions that anxiety is a classic menopause symptom.

I'm not very scientific but I understand that oestrogen effects your sense of well being?

Rubbish!  I have had a personality change overnight.  I used to feel like this for 24 hours before my periods started...and only then.  I don't think anyone would argue that was hormonal, so why not accept this is too?

Also the only other time I have experienced anxiety like this was when I had PND. Would your GP like to argue that PND isn't hormonal, too :o
