Cripes progesteron really does cause me problems
« on: November 04, 2015, 06:53:44 PM »

I decided to conduct a little experiment. I'd been taking Evorel Conti patch for the past four months-just a very low dose about a third of the patch. I found that the effects of the progestogen were outweighing the oestrogen and a month ago I saw a consultant and embarked upon a long cycle HRT regime.
So I started Estradot.25 mg patch and apart from a few hiccups the first week I have felt really good on it.
I suddenly realised that the progestogen part (Provera)  could well clash with Christmas,  birthdays  etc so I thought I would revert to one of my Evorel Conti patches - the idea being to delay the Provera by a couple of weeks plus I guess I had a niggle going round my head; had the Evorel really caused me problems?
So on patch changeover last Friday I used an Evorel instead - half a patch so it was the same oestrogen as the Estradot.  Well for the first 24 hours I was quite delighted that maybe I had imagined the negative impact of Evorel but then gradually the fog hit my head, the tiredness overwhelmed me, my sleep was disturbed and I had vivid  dreams and by Monday afternoon I felt absolutely terrible, almost incapable of functioning, a feeling that I was battling against everything and everybody  and terrible anxiety started to creep over me; I truly felt scared. I made the decision to revert to the Estradot patch when I changed patches later on that Monday. It wasn't too long before all those awful things disappeared.

So my experiment confirmed that the progesterons in the conti regimes don't suit me (I've already tried fem7) no wonder I never felt that good for the 4 months I was using the patch. I know and agree we have to allow our bodies to adapt to new 'medicines' but I think these side effects would have persisted, maybe at a lower level but enough to impact.
I'm just going to get on and reap the benefits of how I feel now and enjoy it! I'll cross the bridge of how I cope with Provera when it comes to it.

Could you delay enough to avoid C.mas?

Interesting to report your experiment Sunnydays - and that you now know Evorel conti does not suit you.

With my cyclical HRT ( not as long a cycle as yours I don't think?) I plan my year round when I'm going away so that I try not to be taking prog, nor bleeding when I'm away or round Christmas. We go away a lot in the summer from April onwards, Sometimes it involves having a slightly shorter cycle and sometimes longer. If I do a two monthly one it will be fine but I am feeling that's a bit long for me in early 60's now.  This last year was really complicated - I had to write it all down then put on my calendar (on comp!).

If you delated the prog, how long will it have been on oestrogen alone (not counting your experiment)?. As CLKD says - you could delay or bring forward?

Thank you for your replies :)
I started estradot on 9th October so except for the 3 days of the evorel conti last week, that's 4 weeks today that I've been oestrogen only. By the 1st January it will be something like 12 weeks so I could start the Provera then, Christmas and birthdays will be over.  Alternatively I'm  wondering about maybe starting it at the end of November, so it's all done and dusted, and I'd have a trial run at what it will be like.  I'll have to read up on other threads for typical doses other ladies have taken for this shorter cycle.
The maddening thing is that when I spoke to my GP about the long cycle, and if I think about it to myself at home, I feel fine about it; however as soon as I look on the Internet or read different threads on the forum I freak out that no one else does it and it could all be a terrible thing!
I don't know if being on oestrogen gives you any adverse symptoms as the womb lining builds up which gives you the feeling that you ought to take a progesterone?
Thank you :))
I've been following the threads about Utrogestan. I have family visiting at Christmas and I've asked them to bring me over some from the pharmacy. I don't know if this will be the right one for me as it's variable in who it suits just like the other progesterones but I thought it would be handy to have some in case I wanted to try it as an alternative. My GP has been brilliant but I can't keep asking for different types all the time!

You can't buy this over the counter in UK - I think I've missed where you are living?  Also someone on here was offering to send some but the offer has already been taken off. If she hasn't already sent them you could send a pm and see if you could have one packet? If not pm me  ::).

Re feeling like you need to take prog - this shouldn;t happen although I sometimes imagine my womb feels bigger and heavier as I get to the end of the two months - but I am sure it's my imagination as I am early 60's and there is pressure not to be on HRT. Lack of progesterone ( at least at the quantities needed for endometrial protection) should not cause any symptoms as it is only needed in large quantities for pregancy and as HRT - to protect the endometrium. We do need progesterone but in vary small quantities - made by the adrenal glands (men have it too), but as far as we know at the moment - this is sufficient ( except when taking HRT).

At the right dose most women feel great on oestrogen only - but this means getting the preparation right and of course taking hormones externally is only an approximation of what our bodies did naturally when fertile and under complex internal encodcrine control!

Stellajane - I think it's my imagination as above and the increased bleeding. My scan was absolutely fine so that should tell me it's OK. I am just increasingly anxious about it as I get older and think of my poor worn out womb having to keep doing this every two months or so at my age!!

Oops I didn't make it clear sorry - family who live in Spain and will bring it over to Uk :))
Stella Jane - not hijacking at all; its good to hear different  experiences and I'm grateful for people taking time to reply.
Yes wouldn't it be lovely if a conti regime could work as it is so easy! Gosh 0.75 mgs I wonder how that compares to the low dose patch I have. I also wonder if such a low dose of Estrogen should have just half a tablet of Utrogestan- don't know if that's possible.
Hurdity, it sounds like the womb is being ravished every time there is a progesterone induced bleed  :-\
I'll keep updated on what I do. I think 3 months might produce the niagra falls! Might try 2 months but there again ..........!  :)
