Sorry to butt in to this post but I am just interested about the 3 day break thing. I have recently started Utrogestan and have been taking 100mg but am a bit confused about whether I need to take a break at all. I'm taking HRT for osteoporosis (29 years and have menstruated so not post or perimenopausal). Can anyone advise?! Thank you

I guess it's down to how well you tolerate it then.
I'm trying to push through to see if side effects lessen.but if they don't I might have to change to shorter.

Regarding the the withdrawal,  i had a 3 day migraine when I first took it so if I'm going to suffer the withdrawal I think I'd rather do it after 12 days than 25.
At least it would give me a longer  period of time without the side effects.
25 days plus 3 day withdrawal would give me no respite from it

Thanks for your replies x

morning Stellajane  :)
"as instructed by your prescriber" (have too use " marks sorry SJ still can't sort the flaming quote thing on the forum :-\
You have set off my hugely (well known I hope) biased opinions on the knowledge of prescribers  :-X ;D (in the best possible way I might add! - no controversy here  ;)). Yes I know I am quite unreasonable on the subject but it is born out of the fact so many women's personal experiences written here show that most of them don't have a baldy notion (irish phrase ;))  either what is available, what they are prescribing or how to use it - they can confuse the hell out of us!!  After the consultant when I spoke to my GP she hadn't a clue and our practice prescriber got my prescription all up the left (...and another one! ;D).

I rather like my Utrogestan sheet - it's pinned to my whiteboard above my desk - I think it's quite good because it sets out clearly both baseline options (if some of us with really awkward bodies (me me me) that won't play ball have take a diversion, at least we can work out what it is we have deviated from  :)  - see thems in white coats - ref meno - don't really hold them in high regard and yes I know there have been some posts lately about how great some GP's and consultants have been but they are much rarer than that ones which start "well...I went to see my GP and... :bang:)

Check with your prescriber Jasmine because that's a rather specialised situation.

Ladybt28 - yes of course you can continue to have a cycle post menopause if that's what suits you best. Its all down to individual responses.  Some women need to take it every day without a break because for example the break induces migraine as progesterone levels drop.

It would actually be better if the leaflet didn't say anything but "as instructed by your prescriber".

Thanks stella Jane,

I'm awaiting an appointment in May with Dr Panay as my GP didn't have a clue and just asked what the gynaecologist had said (he didn't say!)!! To be honest I've not got a clue what I'm doing but I will continue with 100mg daily until my appointment I guess!

Have a look at Dr Renee Hoenderkamp's VLOG on Utrogestan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aT3aSVfjb20&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR3Tp6HMc0IB3qkzZ5QKs-2DkZ2OMLFVnq9Mb_3Gfj3nPbz5zN43__3UIeM

Dr Renée describes who needs progesterone in HRT and why. She then describes the different ways in which it can be delivered and how to use the commonly confused Utrogestan. In a nutshell:

Bleeding regimens:
Oestrogen daily
Utrogestan 200mg days 15-26

Non Bleed regimen:
Oestrogen daily
Utrogestan 100mg every day (no break)

Jasmine. You and me both! . How are we supposed to not be confused when the docs so clearly are.
I like the idea of your utrogestan sheet lady. I wonder if I can download one. I'm gonna have a look

Tc....have a look at this document written by Dr Louise Newson.  She describes how Utrogestan is prescribed for 25 days out of 28, but can be prescribed every day off licence as it's much easier to remember to take it.

Yes. Alternate days is interesting.  I've found issues with using it vaginally on the  days I use estriol. It just slides out whole  so I've been persevering orally but with bad side effects.
I think I might try alternate vaginally one day and orally the next. I.e. the days I'm using estriol. Don't know if that might properly confuse my body.i realise I would still have no break from the utrogestan doing it this way but if I could take it vaginally every night I would get a chance to see if that helps with side effects and on estriol I can't do that  time for vagifem maybe but that's another story.

Thank you dotty for the info. It helps so much when a lady on here is able to point towards helpful documents as I for one have got myself in a right 2 and 8 with random googling!

Tc... glad the documents helped. I spent many hours randomly googling .... 18 months ago I was very, very ill with menopause symptoms. All I can do is tell people what has worked for me and what I found out along this horrible road xxx
