UTI, stones or thrush!!!???
« on: November 22, 2025, 06:35:19 AM »

Anyone with any experience of these things would appreciate advice please!!

The last month or so I’ve had a nightmare with what the GP stated was likely a UTI.

The very long story is - had some vaginal spotting had pelvic exam and swabs taken. Whilst waiting on swabs developed an achy pain left side up by ribs that moved into my side. Urine was a little like it had pieces floating in it. Back to the GP ago said urine had a little blood and white cells in so likely UTI have some nitrofuratoin and off I went. Took those for 5 days, urine cleared a little but blood and white cells still there (I got home dipsticks at this point). Then a few days later I feel horrendous no appetite and so sick, urine has tones of goop in it. I also then get a text to say “ you have thrush” which by this point is raging as I had it already and now it’s had some lovely antibiotics so it’s rife.

Walk in centre give me trimethoprim and tell me to do thrush pessary. 3 days of trimethoprim and the thrush is then out of hand and soooooo painful. The next day I get a sample or urine to my GO and they sent it to the lab. Do the one dose pessary that night and I wake up a few hours later with it burning and itching, go to the toilet and it falls out. So thrush is still raging so decide to try the cream, still burns and makes my need to pee all night which I assume is inflamed urethra maybe. I also start probiotics at this point as I assume the thrush is loving this situation. The next day after the pessary came the day I couldn’t pee, the urethra seemed so swollen that no urine would come out. I had drunk a litre but only a trifckle of pee would come out if that when I went; and boy did I need to go. Anyway I chugged yet more water and in the afternoon finally managed a real wee. Anyway in the toilet bowl (which I wish I had checked first) seemed to be 3 little dark hard gritty things. I fished them out (gross I know) and they felt really hard and gritty, like little pieces of gravel. Now I don’t know if they were in the toilet already, I don’t think so but can’t be sure. Anyway after this I was able to pee again.

Urine starts to clear still slight blood and white cells but this is decreasing.

So decided to do the 6 day pessary which is a lower dose, this plan seems to work better as no burning etc. Mild irritation when the chalky stuff comes out which makes me need to pee when it touches the urethra but that’s all.

Over the next 2 weeks the white cells and blood in my urine go! Hooray I think this nightmare is finally over (or nearly)  and I’m diligently taking probiotics and drinking loads.

A week after it went off the urine sample comes back, small amount of blood and white cells but a significant and massive culture grown of candida! In my urine: I was told “oh probably contamination given you had vaginal thrush” and that was that.

So after 2 weeks of repair work and settling I’m still getting an ache in my side and down to my hip, up under my ribs and lower back. It varies in intensity and seems to be worse when moving. Off to the GP who says “might be your bowels unsettled after the antibiotics” let’s send more urine off and just double check the candida isn’t in the bladder as there is a chance it could be a fungal UTI. Off my urine went to the lab 4 days ago.

So I’ve even managed a few nights where I sleep through the night; I’m managing to eat a bit more normally again and feeling more positive about what has been a nightmare. Then two days ago notice spotting when wiping (first time in ages, on the mirena coil and post meno - had a scan last month which was all fine) then tiny amount of blood in wee and a tiny amount of white cells which I chalk up to the spotting. Next day spotting gone and urine clear again. Then last night at 1am I wake with the familiar need to pee feeling but not too much coming out. I also feel like I’m a bit itchy down there again. Have some discharge but hard to tell if normal as my thrush symptoms were not super obvious before. This morning I have more blood in my wee again. Of course this all happens on a Saturday when my GP is closed!!!! No sign of the results of my latest urine culture yet either.

So I’ve come to the following conclusions and I really don’t know what to do -

1. There is another UTI that maybe the ABs worked on last time
2. The UTI was a candida one all along, linked to thrush and the ABs made it worse
3. I potentially had kidney stones not a UTI and then thrush as a secondary issue caused by all the ABs
4. I have kidney cancer or kidney failure and I’m doomed

I have no history whatsoever or UTIs or anything so this is all new to me!!!! Problem is I don’t seem to had burning or stinging when I pee and I also don’t seem to get typical thrush symptoms.

Here I am on a Saturday not knowing what to do!? If I go to the GP out of hours I’m assuming they will pack me off with more ABs which might not be needed and might make it worse.

I am so fed up and so worried/depressed! Sorry for the long post can anyone please help? 😢

Many samples have those cells etc. i.e. trace of blood which is within normal limits.

There is a condition where a urine infection can 'bed in' deeply and the urine sample should be 'grown' to allow the correct AB to B prescribed.  5 and 3 days isn't enough treatment anyway.

Has your GP suggested vaginal atrophy?  This condition mimics repeated urine infection-type symptoms really really well.

VA can causing spotting on contact = when we wipe after a P.  Your symptoms of 'needing to P again' is symptomatic of Vaginal Atrophy.

I suggest getting some Greek LIVE yoghurt to eat which will help reboot the digestive tract top to bottom.

It sounds like it could be kidney stones or a kidney infection with you saying you had pain in back, feeling poorly and blood in urine. The anti biotics may have tried to clear it but you might need more to completely get rid. And those hard things you passed in the toilet could be the stones. With it being weekend can you not walk into A&E and tell them your symptoms and get checked over? They should do bloods etc

Sounds like you've had a horrendous time.  Probably kidney stones as the evidence was in the toilet. Inflamation from the kidney stones then causing UTI that may settle now you've passed them. Have you tried the oral tablet fluconazole for the thrush, that will reach everywhere, better than pessaries which cause me more irrtation and don't disolve because of my VA.
Keep us posted and hope you feel better soon.

Hey everyone - so the dr didn’t mention atrophy and said it didn’t look atrophied during pelvic exam. That said I had a whole pessary drop out undissolved 12 hours after I put it in so it would appear there is some dryness for sure!

The urine sample number 2 is being cultured as we speak so I’m hoping that will tell us if anything there!

I was thinking of trying the fluconazole tablet today just to try and knock any thrush on the head. I feel a lot better than I did a few weeks ago but now worried again; the flank pain I get is kind of transient. It was really bad on Tuesday this week and went all the way down my side almost to my hip. That has eased a lot but now I have the urgent need to pee feeling and a slightly full/bloated belly feeling.

I have awful health anxiety and actually as long as I know it’s stones I can suck up the pain and wait it out.

Something interesting has happened even since I posted this a couple of hours ago. I’ve not drunk a thing all morning but just went to the bathroom a minute ago and did a massive wee that was really healthy and pale!!! So it went from dark to normal without me drinking! I also dipped the urine sample and the healthy colour one had no blood in! What on earth is going on?? Maybe another little stone passed and irritated my bladder.

I’m full down the health anxiety hole of bladder/kidney cancer now though. Erghhhhhhhhhhh

Yep - the brain goes into worst case scenario ..........  :foryou:

My symptoms of VA niggling are a heaviness below the belly button, a bladder that feels aggravated so I use a treatment mid afternoon and then every night for 5-6 added plus a Nurofen capsule 3 times a day to ease the nip as the urine flow stops.  A nip that makes me go goosebumps all over !

We often 4get that the kidneys extract fluids from everything that we eat not simply from our liquid intake.

R U running a temperature at all?

Nope no fever at all, I feel a bit queasy and like I have no appetite (but also feel hungry) but not sure how much of that is anxiety.

It’s been an awful 6 weeks for lots of reasons and my appetite has been terrible I’ve lost 2kg (I am quite overweight) but of course my mind jumps to the worst case scenario then too.

I might well try some vaginal estrogen as you say it might help; pretty sure it won’t do any harm at least!

Let us know how you get on.

U probably aren't dying!  Perhaps keeping a note of symptoms would help?

I hope not!! I’ll keep you posted for sure! I have lower back pain but it’s more like muscular pain only hurts when I move and twist. It’s all too much to think about!

I suffer terribly with health anxiety too. I've also just had a massive flare up caused i think by thrush. Took a fluconazole tablet and I improved in 24 hours so probably was thrush. I don't have the text book symptoms of thrush, I'm dry and don't have the itch, so it's hard to diagnosed from VA without a trip to the doctors and swabs taken.
Best diet ever, stress, worry and feeling ill.
Sounds like your bladder is improving and kidneys working fine again now they've got rid of the stones.
Pain with movement is usually muscular or skeletal.
I give it a couple of days before taking a thrush tablet as it sounds you might not need it now. If you've took it no worries.

Hi. I've a history of UTIs. I was in hospital with an untreated one. By which time I was peeing thick dark blood.  Yours sounds as though it had travelled up to your kidney. If it's clearing up, all good, but if you start with those symptoms again you should go to an out of hours surgery, call 111 (I don't know which country you're in) or an urgent care surgery as kidney infections need treatment.  I'm not sure I'd rely too much on home dip sticks especially if you're taking antibiotics etc. They're not that reliable. It's so worrying when you have to try figuring out your own health symptoms. Many of us seem to be doing it at present

Yes Dierdre I have the same issue! I never have obvious signs of thrush, it takes a swab to tell me! I’m hoping the urine culture will be back soon and that will tell me if I have candida in my bladder and if I do then need anti fungals anyway. I’m a bit better today have what feels like a deep mild abdomen ache but my urine seems a little clearer and a bit less urgent so fingers crossed!

Hi Jules yes in hindsight next time lll go to hospital, I did go to urgent care and at the time felt like I was going to throw up/collapse but was still sent away! I’m loads better than that now but still can’t shake off the mild flank ache. I’ll wait and see th culture results I guess then maybe push for a renal scan and check the kidneys and for any stones.

They sent you away? Good grief. I vomited when I arrived at the hospital. It does sound like kidneys and they thought I had a stone but I had a CT scan and hadn't any stones. I'd have been waiting weeks here for the scan. They did everything because I was insured. I hope you get some answers.
