Estrogen ring
« on: November 04, 2025, 10:22:07 AM »

Hi there
I have been using Ovestin for 10 years plus...
Had a long bout of UTI's in April and was referred to the gynae dept and finally got my appointment today.
Although the itching has subsided she suggested I use an estrogen ring and could fit one, I could also do it myself at a later date. The estrogen does not go directly into the blood stream (like Ovestin) I was a bit hesitant, it lasts 3 months and then I could stop using the Ovestin she said..
I can't see what I would gain although she stated that the ring would make sex more comfortable. You could not feel it but would combat any dryness in the vagina and bladder.
Another suggestion was to keep using the Ovestin and increase it to 3 times a week.
Anyone used these rings and have any input :-\ ???
Thanks

While you wait for a reply from those with experience, have you searched the forum, you might find some helpful posts on the E-ring and more.

Just search for the word Estring and you’ll find lots of threads on the subject!  :)

If it were me personally, and there would have to be a good reason why I would not be on systemic treatment, but if I were using vaginal estrogen alone in your situation I would use both the estrogen cream and the pessaries daily.

I would also try to source prasterone.

Having seen and handled a demo model of the estring, I cannot imagine how anyone thinks this could be comfortably inserted into an atrophic vagina.

It is large and hard - I used to throw something similar for my dog to fetch - and if you have UTIs now this could get worse if it prevents proper emptying of the bladder and bowel.

Unless you are Michelle Duggar it is likely to be a non-starter.

I'm not sure I know who Michelle Duggar is???

Thanks for your input though ...

All the reproductive hormones are steroid hormones, so estrogen, progesterone and testosterone all are too. Prasterone/dhea is a precursor hormone, your body can make testosterone and estrogen from it.
It’s also used in intrarosa for vaginal atrophy, but most mean vagifem, which is estradiol, when talking about pessaries. When vaginal estradiol doesn’t work well enough, intrarosa can sometimes work better, because it works on both estrogen and androgen receptors in the vagina.

I’ve read pretty good things about estring, I haven’t read it’s uncomfortable (although I would worry about getting it in and out myself), it doesn’t seem to be available here (Netherlands), but I have put it on my list to ask about at my next appointment. So, personally I’d try it if it was offered, although I would worry about getting it in, so I’d probably ask to have the first one placed by my gp.

The pessaries are estradiol and available as brand names Vagifem, Vagirux and Gina that I know of, there may be others.

Michelle Duggar has about 22 children.
