Cyclogest - can it be prescribed by NHS GP?
« on: October 20, 2025, 02:08:16 PM »

Hi, I have been using cyclogest 200g continuously for over a year now, prescribed by a private meno clinic after a serious progesterone response to the tablet form prescribed by GP - I am allergic to soya and so nhs have very limited options or so Im told.

My GP has now informed me that they will no longer prescribe my oestrogen patches as they have no evidence I am using progesterone (they do as Ive sent them the letters / prescriptions) and because cyclogest is off license for HRT.

Im so stressed as I had awful symptoms to previous NHS prescribed tablet - like really really low depression and so Im terrified of going back down that road.

So just wondering if anyone managed to get either cyclogest via their GP or any other non soya type??

I cant make out if they just want to cut costs and have me off their books by forcing me to get ALL my HRT privately

They probably do just want to wash their hands of your prescription entirely.

The issues are twofold, cyclogest is expensive and also unlicenced for endometrial protection (although perfectly safe and effective).

Your GP is not obliged to prescribe cyclogest however you can ask them to refer you to the local NHS menopause service who may be able to authorise this given your documented problems with the standard formulations.

However whilst waiting, if they are unwilling to prescribe your estradiol without a progestogen, simply tell them that you will take whatever progestogen they offer until you can be seen by the NHS menopause clinic.

This way you can continue to receive the patches free and just self fund the cyclogest in the meantime.

Cyclogest is not expensive in pharmacies in Spain so the NHS should be able to buy it quite cheaply with their greater buying power.

Off the top of my head, a box of 15 x 400mg pessaries was under €20.  I've got an unopened box and I don't use it anymore (I've switched to progesterone gel and Cerazette) but I used to cut them into 50mg doses.  I found it worked well with no side effects but it was messy!

Paracetamol costs about 24p in ASDA but the NHS pay far more than this per box due to bureaucracy and lack of fiscal responsibility.

NHS procurement just pay the price asked for drugs and equipment etc and do not negotiate or shop around.
