Is there a shortage of Medroxyprogesterone provera ?
« on: October 08, 2025, 01:59:47 PM »

Ladies, I was prescribed estrogen patches and Medroxyprogesterone as when I was on HRT 2 years ago I didn't get on too well with utrogestan.
My problem is the prescription was put in on September the 18th, and they still can't get any 😳. Is there a shortage of this, and is there a different progesterone I could try ?

Many thanks 😊

You can use 150mcg desogestrel daily ie 2x cerazette pills. See the BMS website for evidence on this, although currently off label use.

This is less unpleasant to take for most people than provera and more metabolically favourable. You may not want to switch back!

These can be bought otc (if you say it is for contraception) up to age 55 or if you have someone younger to purchase on your behalf if your GP won't support this.

Dydrogesterone has also just been made available on the UK market but can be expensive to buy and access via the NHS is limited although expected to improve.
