Hi Vicki81,

Sorry for your loss.

For me (and everyone is different) having too much HRT estrogen caused me to have large, sore, swollen boobs, additional body blubber, increased anxiety/jitteryness, increased allergies, increased digestive issues. As soon as I reduced my dose these symptoms decreased. Unfortunately, I believe these symptoms can also indicate low estrogen so it can be a case of gradual trial and error in either direction. I felt I was in a game of Higher or Lower. I went higher first then gradually went lower. I found it particularly hard to manage in peri as I was having big fluctuations.

If you add grief and loss and stress into the mix it is difficult to identify if they are solely the cause of low mood issues or whether menopause is the cause. For me it felt that menopause just made everything feel even worse to how I would have felt without it.

I hope this helps. X

Firstly it is extremely difficult to be overtreated with an estrogen patch within licenced (NHS) doses.

These are designed to at best replicate the early follicular phase of a natural menstrual cycle.

However if you are perimenopausal you may be having significant fluctuations in endogenous estradiol, with peaks higher than you may have experienced in the past, plus whatever you are receiving via the patch.

I am pretty "estrogen blind" - I have been from chemical menopause to producing 20+ eggs repeatedly during the course of IVF, however symptoms commonly reported with high estrogen are breast swelling and tenderness, water retention and nausea.

I attended a Grief Cafe at my doctors surgery earlier this year. Do you have anything at your surgery ? It was early days for me but a good mix of people & some really helpful ‘pointers’ from the person running it.
I would say better being amongst others than individual counselling.

Hi Vicky81,

Firstly I am sorry for your loss.

My daughter died in 2019 and at the time I had a GP appointment already booked to discuss switching/increasing my HRT. I was 46 at the time.

When I saw my GP she advised me not to change anything with my HRT due to grief.  I think I ended up waiting a good six months before making any changes and with hindsight I am glad I waited as I had lots of physical anxiety symptoms kick in due to grief but I would not have known what these were down to had I tinkered with my HRT at the same time.

HTH.

Sorry can I ask Ali- when you had physical anxiety......was it down to too low estrogen or was you using too high? Patch or gel? Thank you xxxx

Hi Vicky,

I was on oral HRT at the time, Femoston 1/10, so a low dose, if I remember correctly my hot flushes were starting to creep back in a little so I was interested in increasing my HRT.

Menopause symptoms and grief are such messy things but I would say that my physical anxiety syptoms were down to grief and trauma and not connected to my oestrogen levels.

Unfortnately when we have more than one 'issue' going on at the same time its's difficult to know what is causing which symptoms....

I think my GP gave me good adivce in waiting to alter my HRT until I was further down the road on my grief journey.

HTH xx
