Why don't doctors care?
« on: July 14, 2025, 11:22:20 AM »

Is it that we are now on the scrap heap? Why did my employment not matter to the extent my GP wouldn't give me a sick line because my HRT side effects weren't known to her?

I don't work any more, it's a shame but I couldn't manage it any more. I was having to trial progestins to earn my right to HRT, I wasn't getting oestrogen until they'd found a progestin I could tolerate.

So what were these unknown side effects?

I was too exhausted to get out of bed, too depressed to see the point of living, all brought on like a switch flicked to "I wanna die" by provera, norethisterone and the rest of them.

I left work, I couldn't work at the same time as trying out the progestins and trying them out didn't merit a sick line. It made me the illest I've felt in my life. Twice I've had influenza and thought I was dying, this was the same.

Eventually I was allowed tibolone. It doesn't make me ill, but it doesn't entirely work either, I still have night sweats and need vagirux as well.

This is my 26th month on the gynae waiting list, our health trust doesn't currently have a gynacologist so we have to share with the neighbouring trust.

So while I understand why the wait is so long, I don't get why the GP can't be a tad more caring in the meanwhile.

GPs often work part time these days.  Our surgery offers an on-line triage form to fill in which got me to an appt. within 12 hours.

Your GP could have referred you to a menopause clinic but I don't think that they are all aware that these exist and some GPs still have attitude that if they aren't aware of X, Y, Z symptoms that they don't exist!  Especially when we don't push that hot flushes and loss of periods!

R U able to take a cancellation appt at short notice?  If so ring the Gynae dept as I am sure that there will be many non attendances throughout each year which cost the NHS £Ks in lost appts. because patients move, die or simply don't think to cancel!

How often are U using the 'vagirux'?

What a horrible experience, I always say it's ok for a health professional not to know, but it's never ok not to care.

Unfortunately I think this experience is becoming very common due to workload and resource pressures causing individuals to become jaded and burnt out.

GPs are frequently only allocated 8 minutes per patient, and the days when you knew who your GP was and had a relationship with them over the life course are long gone, so you are typically dealing with someone you have never met before and won't see again, who simply hasn't the time to read your medical notes or understand your history before you enter the room.

This is where AI could put up a patient précis on a screen. Especially to flag up any medications that shouldn’t be given to a patient.

We’ve experience of the later and a complaint went to the practice manager and GP changed.
Persuing a complaint against the former GP it became apparent that it was just not possible.

AI shouldn't be necessary but reading patient notes should be essential. I have noted a lot more reports of patient 'neglect' particularly in A&E when medics failed to read thoroughly enough when patients arrived.  With paper notes they have to turn the page, on screen they don't seem to scroll down though there should be short cuts to find out history of any patient.

Our GPs get 10 mins and our Practice Nurse 20, although I never feel rushed when in an appt.
