Blood in urine during hot weather
« on: June 28, 2025, 10:38:57 PM »

Hi Ladies

I have found over this last year that when the weather is really hot my urine is pinkish. I have no other symptoms and do try and drink more  water. This started last year and wondered if anyone else found this happening.  At the moment I am using Vagifem 3  - 4 times a week but thought I might increase the dose to every night until the temperature drops. Any thoughts welcome .

Increase to every night.  Dehydration/dryness may well increase the VA problem .  If urine is pink it's most likely that the tissues internally are dry and thin.

Persistent blood in the urine should be checked out by a doctor if it hasn't been already.

It is usually nothing but one of those symptoms that shouldn't be ignored.

It is fine to use vagifem every day long term if you need to - whilst systemic treatment at a therapeutic dose is optimal, for those who can't or choose not to use this, vaginal estrogen is perfectly safe, and has negligible absorption beyond the genital tissues.

Thank you Bombsh311 and CLKD.

Having had time to think  I now remember this did start a few years ago around 2018 before I started using topical HRT. I was on holiday in a very hot climate .Saw the doctor on my return  to be checked out and everything settled down..  Fast forward to 2024 happened again in Summer on holiday but this time I did have a UTI so that is when the GP recommended Vagifem which I have been using  now for 10 months.
The Vagifem seems to be working well (thank god ) but  I think it might be good to step it up for a couple of weeks.  I am 80 yrs old and have only had 1 UTI  this year so shouldn’t really complain but it scary to see blood in ones urine!

Morning. MayB ring the Surgery and ask whether a fresh urine sample to the GP though if there is any trace of blood in a dip stick test they will prescribe antibiotic therapy.  Which probably isn't necessary, the sample should be sent to a Lab to check which 'bug' may be present.

How do U feel overall?  Any chills, although when atrophy is present for me, when I pee I shiver  ::).  I've never noticed blood on wiping.

Let us know how you get on. Glad that the VA treatment works for you, we can use it nightly for a long time if necessary.

Actually I feel perfectly fine....no pain on urinating, no shivers or back ache. However good idea to take a sample to  the GP tomorrow as I certainly do not want to take antibiotics unnecessarily.

I do think that diet and lifestyle can also trigger VA problems and symptoms. I know this week I have been rather neglectful .... far to to much stress in my life and also a weakness for sugar and caffeine when stress takes over !

It’s not a good idea but I say to myself life is too short so  it’s ok to have another bar of chocolate or cup of coffee  .  I think I am paying for that now.

Of course it's OK occasionally  ::).  When anxiety takes over I am unable to eat so anything that I fancy is snatched up.

Do discuss with the practitioner: U may get to C a Nurse Practitioner quicker than a GP: the necessity of ABs of the dip stick shows traces of blood because that is common with atrophy.  If u don't have that nip as the urine flow shuts off or the shivers I suspect that it's VA rather than an infection.

We have an online triage system to get appts.

Well it was most strange after a worrying weekend everything seemed to settle down over night.

However I did take a sample in to the nurse practitioner  who  used the dipstick and  said there was no sign of infection and only a tiny bit of blood. She is sending it to the lab but thinks it is just the VA.

Have decided to make a note of possible triggers daily and see if there is a pattern but for now I am going to be really strict with my diet and also try to lower my stress level.

:thankyou:  4 the update.  And well done the Nurse for. not prescribing ABs 'in case'.

Heat and stress can increase VA - probably because we use more energy and also the body dries in hot weather impacting the whole body, inside and out.
