Late menopause or something else,?
« on: May 16, 2025, 03:17:34 PM »

Hi all,

I'm feeling very stressed and actually quite depressed.  I'm 55 and have been referred by my GP to see a gynecologist on the 2 week pathway.   I am still having periods which I'm assured is not particularly concerning but since March I had my first proper period in about 9 months. I'd had a few what I would call barely periods in the months in between but was on hrt so felt like I was finally in menopause.
Then in March I had a period and  5 weeks later another one.  Then 2 weeks later I'm bleeding again.  Not much on the pad but definitely blood when I wipe.  It's dark so I know that usually signifies older blood.
I'd just completed radiotherapy for a DCIS and was feeling ready to celebrate and get on with life and now this.  More hospital appointments and more worry.
Has anyone else had a similar experience.  Not on hrt although I was for about 1.5 years and had been having quite regular periods.  I came off hrt in November 2024.

Anyone had a similar experience?  No scare stories please I can't take anymore.

I'm so sorry that you are now having this worry after having to cope with your DCIS diagnosis and treatment. I just wanted to say that this was my bleeding pattern during peri-menopause at age 53 before starting HRT. Are you sure you are post meno i.e. a whole year without natural (not HRT induced) periods?

I haven't gone a full year without periods but because I was on hrt this time last year I have no idea where I am with natural periods.  My oncologist was not concerned but that was before I'd had this bleed so soon after the last.

It's good to get it checked out but try not to worry too much. Many women are still experiencing periods at your age and while on HRT you have no way of knowing whether you are experiencing true periods or 'bleeds' caused by hrt.

I wouldn't worry, it isn't unusual for late peri. If you were 50 they'd tell you to go away and not worry, they only panic when you're older (been there, got the Tshirt. Made the mistake of telling them about the 2 recent periods I'd had aged around 60). Some women aren't meno til their early 60s. It's natural to worry but please try not to, I'd be very surprised if they find anything nasty.
