Endometrium 11mm and huge fibroid with coil fitted
« on: May 04, 2025, 07:32:15 AM »

Hi
I’m just wondering has anyone had experience of having a coil as the progrestrine part of their hrt and had an increase in size of their endometrium plus fibroids increasing. I’m 60 been on hrt 10 years but has a coil fitted 2 years ago and my endometrium was then 4.5 it’s now 11!!  Plus my fibroids which I’ve always had are now much bigger! Have to have MRI and hysteroscopy and I’m really anxious

Sorry Bibi
No experience of this - due to get coil fitted this week. It’s obviously really key that you get the right medical advice asap - assume you are ? Try not to worry - all things are resolvable or treatable.

I’m 61 this month and last October I had a mirena fitted whilst having a biopsy due to post menopausal bleeding on continuous oestrogel and utrogestan. At my 6 week coil check the nurse at my surgery couldn’t find the mirena threads so referred me for a scan to check it was still in place or if the strings had been cut too short. I had the scan the week before Xmas and had a call from the drs the next day to say that the scan had shown that my endometrium had pretty much doubled in thickness in three months, from 4.5mm when the coil was fitted to 10mm. I was referred for a hysteroscopy and another biopsy, which was carried out at the beginning of January. The consultant showed me vascular synachiae, which are apparently adhesions, which had wrapped themselves around the arms of the coil, he also removed a polypoidal area. I was also told that although my previous biopsy result was negative, the lab had said there was insufficient tissue, so he took a more thorough biopsy. He also replaced the previous coil as the consultant that had fitted it had cut the threads too short. My biopsy results all came back negative, but there was no reason given for the endometrium thickening other than the fitting of the mirena can trigger it in some people. I hope that goes some way to reassuring you a little. I know I felt exactly the same as you when I found out, I did post on here at the time as I was very concerned.

Hi Gemini
Thank you so much for your reply. That’s really helpful to know Interestingly the threads of my coil have never been visible and I was told after they checked it in the first few months that they had gone up but that it was in the correct position. Same again last week on the ultrasound which is when they referred me for all of the above. The gyne said she was concerned with a coil fitted that I had endometrial thickness! I now wonder if it’s that and clearly i didn’t get enough progesterone. As you clearly didn’t. Either way she has to perform a hysteroscopy now so I’ll get her to remove it. But hopefully it hasn’t caused anything nasty if it is that. Makes you wonder they fit us with these things dole us out hrt but no one checks on you ever unless you bleed. Seems a flawed system.
Thank you again for answering

Yes, as someone said on my original post back in December, if it wasn’t for the fact that the nurse couldn’t see the threads and she referred me for the scan I’d have been none the wiser.
My previous post was here

I hope everything is ok for you.
