Information about hrt coil
« on: May 04, 2025, 12:36:43 PM »

Hey, this is my first time posting here so please excuse any rookie mistakes. I’m 56 and have been on various different hrt for about 5 years. About 6 months ago I started experiencing heavy frequent bleeding after not doing so for nearly a year. I had tests etc and all seems to be healthy so I’ve been advised to come off the patches and try the coil. I’m a bit nervous about this as I’ve heard a few scary stories. Ant experiences would be welcome 🙏

The mirena IUS can be a really good option for controlling bleeding and providing the endometrial protection needed alongside estrogen therapy.

However you should not be asked to stop the estrogen patches as the IUS contains no estrogen, unless you were on a combined patch and would be moving to an estradiol alone patch alongside the IUS.

There's little point putting a mirena in a 56 year old if you don't plan to continue estrogen.

If you aren't comfortable with the IUS and prefer a non-invasive option there are also multiple oral progestins that could be tried.

Thank you for that advice. I’m assuming she’s asked me to stop the evorel conti as a sort of reset as I’m experiencing bleeding bi weekly. She didn’t mention oestrogen but I get your point. Unfortunately the nhs care giver I’m speaking with is not as helpful as I would have hoped so I’m seriously considering going private. Just feeling a bit frustrated I suppose

I think it's like all hrt, it's absolutely fine for most people but a small number have problems. I've had one for 4 months and it's great, I wish I'd had one sooner. If you're worried about removal ask your surgery, often they have a nurse who can remove it at short notice if you can't tolerate it. It's often the best for sorting out problem bleeding but there are other (oral) options if you really don't want one. You will need oestrogen only patches with it.

I really didn't want a Mirena, for various reasons but ended up having one put in under GA after my lining built up too much with low dose Utrogestan. I've had no issues with it personally, but am aware of a few horror stories. If you go ahead, I would make sure the person fitting it is experienced in doing so.

Hi I’ve had about 4 Mirena coils and they’ve been fantastic for me. Really wish I had got one sooner as I had heavy periods for years before menopause. Had my first one fitted after my daughter was born over 20 years ago and  have had one ever since then. I’m 59 now and use it along side Evorelle oestrogen only patches. The only one issue I had with is the strings disappeared but they just send you to the gynae department at hospital to remove it as they have a special instrument for it. I didn’t feel any different to having it removed with the strings. I would recommend taking someone with you to drive home just in case you feel a bit wobbly after as it can have that effect on some women. The discomfort having it inserted was well worth all the benefits for me of no periods since I was about 36 !

Thank you 🙏 I feel certainly more reassured after reading the posts. I will give it a try, anything is better than heavy periods every two weeks
