Similar situation, I stayed on HRT for five years at about 50 because of crippling hot flushes. I came of it after the five years and the flushes had gone, perhaps you need a little bit longer on HRT.
Its been pointed out too many times on this forum the scare mongering posts if you don't stay on HRT for the rest of your life you will be doomed to a life of horrible diseases. Well I haven't encountered this and at aged 75 I am not experiencing any issues, the only thing I put that down to is a healthy lifestyle, that's vitally important for old age.
If you want to take HRT again to relieve your hot flushes then go ahead and when you decide to stop I expect the hot flushes will have gone.
If you do suffer with GSM (Vaginal Atrophy) symptoms in the future that's easily solved with topical oestrogen treatment and without any of the risks from taking systemic HRT.
