Hot flushes and restarting HRT
« on: March 15, 2025, 10:08:58 PM »

Hi all,
Been on Evorel Conti patches for 7 years with a few breaks. HRT worked really well. At 54 decided to see whether HRT was still needed. Cut patch down over
3 months then stopped for 3 months. Hot flushes and night sweats returned immediately (10 a day, 3-5 at night) and did not decrease at any point. Seems to me that HRT might be needed again, but have others experienced this and the flushes eventually stopped?! My health is great and no additional risk factors.

Research suggests that vasomotor symptoms last on average 7 years. For some women they never go away without treatment.

Other effects of hypoestrogenism such as bone loss and urogenital atrophy are progressive.

Is there a particular reason you feel you should give up a treatment that is benefiting you? This is common with women and hormone therapy - you seldom see for example a man saying this treatment is really helping my condition but I think I should come off it.

Similar situation, I stayed on HRT for five years at about 50 because of crippling hot flushes. I came of it after the five years and the flushes had gone, perhaps you need a little bit longer on HRT.

Its been pointed out too many times on this forum the scare mongering posts if you don't stay on HRT for the rest of your life you will be doomed to a life of horrible diseases. Well I haven't encountered this and at aged 75 I am not experiencing any issues, the only thing I put that down to is a healthy lifestyle, that's vitally important for old age.

If you want to take HRT again to relieve your hot flushes then go ahead and when you decide to stop I expect the hot flushes will have gone.
If you do suffer with GSM (Vaginal Atrophy) symptoms in the future that's easily solved with topical oestrogen treatment and without any of the risks from taking systemic HRT.

Thanks so much both. Good to hear how others manage.
Checked in with GP and they are happy to re-prescribe. So I’ll keep going with the patches, decent sleep and no aches and pains!
