Horrific mood swings
« on: March 02, 2025, 10:55:40 AM »

Anyone got any solutions to help the horrific peri mood swings?

The pms is hideous.
But follicular mood swings are even worse.

Crying, low, narky as hell, ripping into people.

What can help?

Oh no, you are still suffering Crispy? Where are you up to with meds etc? Did you opt for an anti depressant? X

My sleeping is pretty good. It's the only thing I have.

Nas. I'm still in hell. I upped my escitalopram to a therapeutic dose a whole 12 weeks ago. It's been brutal. Hideous side affects of anxiety and depression. And very sore teeth!

I'm at the end of my tether. But I do think I'm less angry and rageful on it.

Considering swapping to mirtazapine but I'm so sensitive I'm scared stiff of the sedation.

So looking for other options really.  :(

I’d stick with the escitalopram if you think you are less moody and rageful?

Mirtazapine made me like a zombie in the morning. I much prefer amitriptyline ( but I need that for sleep!)

Are you back at work yet?

Not a chance of being back at work.

The anxiety, moods and sirs teeth are just one part of my horrendous puzzle.

I've still got my poision and daily notion sickness. Been so ill. I've still got my dizziness, now diagnosed as pppd.

Nas. What dose mirtazapine did you take???

Apparently mirtropazine is more sedating at lower doses. Bizarre as that sounds.  ???

Crispy, I did take 15mg doses. Absolutely zombified me and wasn’t compatible with work. It contraindicates with my cancer meds anyway, so i had to stop.

At 7.5 mg it’s VERY sedating indeed, so if you are going to go for it, definitely take the standard 15 mg, I would.

What about a total hysterectomy? Have everything removed and then take what oestrogen you need, to control remaining symptoms. Is that a possibility?

Ok. Thanks Nas.

Yip. I'm really worried about the sedation. I've read that about lower doses.

Absolutely no to a hysterectomy. We don't think all my problems are hormonal as the chem meno caused absolute chaos when all my hormones had gone and were added back in in steady state.

It's looking like a nervous system over reaction kinda thing. Everything I touch just makes me worse.

The escit has made my physical stuff worse as well as my mood and anxiety. I certainly won't be giving mirtazapine 12 weeks!!!

If I could do nothing, I would. But on nothing my mood swings are hell. Now that is hormonal.  :(

Hey Crispy, I wonder if our issues are more cortisol related, my steroid eye drops also made my gums sore, so perhaps your nervous system is overwhelmed. It would explain your other diagnosis and your reaction to tanking your hormones.

It’s been 11 years for me and still no other answers. I am working on gut to help metabolise hormones (including the stress ones like adrenaline and cortisol) by having well cooked mushrooms every day (2 hours simmer to remove the hydrazine) as per Ray Peat and it’s the ONLY thing that has helps in the 11 years. This also acts as a aromatise inhibitor and I am able to eat things that usually cause allergic reactions.

I read that, for those who have a resistance to exogenous hormones and am over reaction to our own, that it may be due to the gut reabsorbing them as they go through the colon. Like you, anything’s worth a try!

Thanks dangernouse.

I'm nearly crying at your use of the term 'our issues'.  :-* I've been feeling so utterly alone with this.

Absolutely I thinky nervous system is overwhelmed. But on nothing it's still overwhelmed. Then the anxiety etc on top...makes me worse. And now I can't tolerate the anti anxiety meds. Blimey!

That said, I believe ssri are more stimulating than other types. So I'll probably try mirtazapine. But it won't be getting a long trial.

Failing that I'm back to nothing, awful symptoms, hormonal hell and crazy anger and rage.  >:(

I've read about the mushrooms. That's really interesting that they're working for you. I'll look some more. Although I'm off my food right now. Which is always what happens when my system is overwhelmed

As you know, I’m always here for you!

I suspect no hormones equals nervous system panic so it does all make sense. Good luck with the ADs, my parents cannot tolerate them so I know they would be impossible for me, we are so sensitive!

My appetite vanished a month into my steroid eye drop use, which felt like severe physical fear, so I used DIM to help metabolise the excess oestrogen and cortisol, and it calmed things and the appetite then came back. I can only tolerate one DIM tablet, then I feel bad for 3 days as the liver deals with it all and then relief for 4 days as if hormone issues were a thing of the past… until it goes back to normal again.

I also found out that cortisol production uses up progesterone, hence why I’m so badly affected with my already too low levels. Will be back on the prog cream once I’m done with my eye drops!

If I find out anything further I’ll report back.

It's all such a minefield.  >:(

So, I've now got my prescription for mirtazapine. The good news is I can try it on top of my 'now reduced' dose of escitalopram. Saves me a long taper when I just want to see if I tolerate.

So I'll do a week on 7.5mg escit - see if that clears up some of the new symptoms  >:( then try the mirtazapine.

I'm only trying to sort a few if my symptoms with the AD and here I am just triggering a worse and worse response in my usual awfulness.  >:(

Interesting info dangernouse. X

From my late 30s I started to get odd mood changes, like a dissociated feeling. It may have been stress hormones popping up randomly as hormones gradually became more and more volatile.  I was up and down through peri from age 45 but more tense feelings than anger. I never had PMT moods but had a few rages when I messed about with HRT.
