Possible Peri Symptoms?
« on: February 17, 2025, 01:29:29 PM »

Hi, so I’m only 31 and I have an autoimmune thyroid condition and had periods every other week for like 2 years from 17-19 so I think I may be in early perimenopause, but every time I mention this to a doctor they immediately say, “No” or, “I wouldn’t worry about it”. So I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced these symptoms in perimenopause because quite frankly, I’m trying to figure out if it’s peri or something else going on.

Discharge: over the last 6-7 months I’ve noticed tons of discharge. Clear, watery, no odor, but tons of it. I’ve had multiple swabs done, they always come back clear- no infections.
Periods: in January of 2024, my periods randomly started only lasting 2 days. In the past couple months, just 1.5 days, if that. They’re almost always on time (at the latest off by a week one month, but for the most part on time or a day or two off). Ovulation seems pretty regular as well.
I’ve been having bad pain on my left side. I’ve been told it’s probably endometriosis, but with these other 2 weird symptoms, I’m wondering if I should push for further testing or if I should accept their endometriosis answer and assume peri menopause and move on.
I have no low libido, no vaginal dryness and I don’t have sex, but use a vibrator and it does not hurt to put it in. I wasn’t sure if those symptoms typically happen when you go through it younger or if that’s just something that happens when you get older.

:welcomemm:  Your health providers seem a bit flippant !

No one is too young to be in peri.  Who is overseeing your thyroid function as peri can interfere with this other hormonal upheaval.

As for 'probably endometriosis' - doesn't sound like you were offered advice or a referral for future treatment?  We should not accept anything but sometimes it all goes over my head and I think "I should have queried that"!  So make a list of your concerns and mayB get a referral to a Nurse Practitioner who generally have longer appt times.

There is also the 'daisy' website for 'early' menopause symptoms.

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you so much!

Yeah, the providers I have seen suck lol but I was just looking to see if this resonated with anyone for their peri symptoms. It’s not really looking like it, though, unfortunately.

Thank you so much for your help and reply!! I will definitely be digging a little deeper with providers!!

Hi ,

Yes I can identify with your symptoms.
I was early 30s when I had similar symptoms to you was constantly brushed off by the doctors saying I was too young to be in menopause and amazingly when I said I thought I was in peri menopause not full menopause they looked at me like I was crazy, when I moved house and went to a new GP surgery my first appointment was with a male GP explained about all my symptoms I had lower left pain constantly felt like it was my ovary , periods that had gone to lasting only 1 to 2 days but still regular like clockwork and I had the watery discharge too , he did all the tests to rule everything out did a FSH test too and it came back I was indeed menopausal I was 38 by this point , he did tell me that blood tests for FSH could be unreliable in peri but he would go off my symptoms and not the blood tests , he did refer me to a gynaecologist at that point due to being under 45 , who where brilliant they told me the watery discharge was actually a symptom of vaginal dryness very strange but true , I was given ovestin cream and used it ever since , they put me on hrt which didn’t agree with me at that point too much estrogen with the fluctuations made me ill, I was post menopause by 42 so went on hrt at that point , my periods also switched from lasting 1to 2 days to lasting weeks and being very heavy which my gynaecologist also said was typical in peri .
So I think your symptoms are related to peri .
That’s just my experience but my GP did do all the testing first to rule any other causes out .

Wishing you well I know how difficult it is to be heard when you are young when it comes to peri menopause but you are definitely not too young , the periods and the watery discharge are almost certainly peri symptoms x

Thank you so much! It’s actually been gynecologists I’ve seen about it. There’s been 3 I’ve seen and 1 more I talked to and they all say, “I wouldn’t worry about it” so thank you!

May I ask how long your periods lasted 1-2 days before picking up to being longer again? And when they were 1-2 days were they super light?

Also, for the discharge, how did you figure out it was due to vaginal dryness? It doesn’t feel like it to me and when I’ve been examined they haven’t commented on any dryness.

Thank you so much!

My periods went so light one day bleeding then barely anything the next day this lasted around a year went back to my normal of 5 days for around a year then the prolonged bleeding started that lasted a couple of years ended up having a coil to stop the bleeding.

I had lots of internal examinations and every doctor said all looked fine so many swabs too and nothing ever came up as a cause .
I ended up googling my symptoms and found information online that a watery discharge was actually a symptom of VA , I also went on various forums where women talked about it , it’s odd because I felt so wet I didn’t think it could possibly because of dryness , when I saw the gynaecologist I told him outright what I thought it was and he said yes it’s the dry vaginal walls that cause a watery discharge and gave me ovestin doesn’t happen since I’ve been using that . None of your symptoms scream hypoestrogenism and you are still having a regular cycle, however you are at increased risk of POI with autoimmune thyroid disorder.

It wouldn't hurt to get an FSH and an estradiol blood test during your period for reassurance however a normal result doesn't exclude perimenopause and this should be reviewed if you develop any relevant symptoms.

For younger women, if you aren't planning on pregnancy the combined pill taken continuously ie active pills every day can be a great option because it provides bone protection if you potentially might be heading into an early perimenopause, can get rid of periods altogether and arrest the progression of any endometriosis.

I thought it was weird that my cycles were still the same and right on time. Thank you so much! Gonna start getting some further testing done

Is your thyroid disease adequately controlled? More importantly, are your levels at the right point for you.

The thyroid is a wonderful thing and more or less ensures that the rest of the body works correctly. Your body will prioritise and use thyroid hormones to protect the important bits, ie brain and heart, and the other bodily functions, including reproductive and digestive, fall much lower down the list of importance.

If I were in your shoes I would make sure that my thyroid levels and key vitamins were optimal before investigating other things. You may find small tweaks are necessary that will work wonders.
