Trying to eat healthy but
« on: November 09, 2024, 09:33:15 PM »

Wondering if it's just me, but it seems like my attempts to eat healthy cause stomach problems  :'(
I'm limited in what I can eat, but it seems that whenever I try to eat healthily, so berries or oatmeal or salmon or similar I get an upset stomach (gas, bloating, diarrhea), however if I eat cakes and white bread and junk food then my gut is happy  ???
I've tried various probiotics, and taken them for several months, but they don't seem to help. Anyone else have similar problems or suggestions?

Well that's opposite to my gut which began to object to 'junk' foods  :o.  So we ditched a lot of ultra processed .......... although DH usually cooks from scratch.

If it works, stick with it.  Live's too short to stuff a mushroom [which we did a lot of in the 1960s  ;D]

This is the same for me. Went to france, ate what I wanted, white baguettes in abundance, rich food, wine every night and all good, living my best life. Came home, tried to eat brown bread and rice = gas and bloating all week. It could be because you've added in more fibre than usual? Or it could he what my colon doctor says in that not everyone's digestion suits a high fibre diet and for some people, they respond better to low residue food that passes through quickly. My gut has definitely changed over the years, can't do dairy anymore, I've become one of 'those' people who ask for weird coffees and pore over menus. After getting caught short once in a restaurant where the sauce my prawns were cooked in included cream, i dont take risks when eating out anymore,  well except in France 🤣

And of course bread is bought several times a day so it doesn't sit on shelves requiring additives to keep it fresh.

I wouldn't worry too much unless symptoms become difficult getting_old, if your diet suits you, stick with it.  Occasionally I have 12 hours of bloating and naueasa so have to leave 8 hours until the next mouth full  ::), have yet to work out what causes it.  :-\

Have you tried sourdough bread Getting Old ? I buy loaves from our local organic bakery which I found ok. Sourdough is said to be less in gluten & have some prebiotic qualities.

Maybe small changes spread out over time might help as the bloating may just be a change in your gut flora happening.  When I started on sour dough it was best to stay up wind of me !

Hello ladies

I won't bore you with my tale of home made Sauerkraut but I will say that it took a while for my digestive system to get used to it.

I was advised that home made Sauerkraut was a potent pro biotic so eating a little at a time was the way to go. Sure enough, after a few weeks I found that even a large serving was okay.

I don't make Sauerkraut very often these days but when I do I can still eat a large serving without any issues. I assume that the bugs that grew to digest Sauerkraut now live happily  on my usual diet. I am pleased that I don't need to pre- load every time I feel the need to ferment some cabbage lol.

The moral of my story is introduce new foods a little at a time and slowly to give the necessary gut bugs a chance to grow.

Take care ladies.

Hi Kathleen
Did you get side effects when you first started with the sauerkraut and how small a dose did you start with, please?
Thanks

Hello Penguin

When I made my first batch of Sauerkraut I was delighted to find that I liked the taste so I added about a tablespoon to my lunchtime salad every day. In the afternoon of day four I felt a rumbling and needed the bathroom. Sorry if the following is tmi but everything was fine however there was a lot of it!  I think anyone who struggled with constipation would be mightily relieved after eating Sauerkraut lol.

I did a bit more research and learned that the solution was to not eat Sauerkraut for a few days and then reintroduce it a little at a time. As you know Sauerkraut is sliced and fermented cabbage so I only ate a few slices about every other day. I found that I could tolerate small amounts so I carried on an then gradually increased. I can't remember the time scale but I know that I was soon able to digest a tablespoonful again and since then I can load up on Sauerkraut every day without any problems.

I assume that initially I didn't have the right gut bacteria to deal with a medium amount of Sauerkraut and consequently my digestive system was overwhelmed. After continuing to introduce much smaller amounts and increasing over time I allowed the necessary gut bugs to grow and flourish. As I said before, I don't make Sauerkraut very often these days but when I do I go back to eating a large serving with my salad and I am absolutely fine.

I wanted to persevere because Sauerkraut is a fabulous pro biotic and is very cheap and easy to make, you can get millions of good bacteria for the price of a cabbage!

I hope this is helpful to you and take care.

K.

I introduced Sauerkraut and kimchi to my diet but I didn't realise it had to be a gradual thing and it started up my ibs again after years of not having any symptoms.  I must re-introduce again but very gradual this time ...

Bear in mind we are all different and so are our bodies, so what may be healthy for 1 is not necessarily healthy for an other ...

We don't have a history of those live foods in our diets, unlike many in mainland Europe .  So it stands to reason  :-\ to introduce anything new, gradually  :-\  ???

What do U all hope to achieve?

That's really helpful thank you, I will make some. Unless there are any shop bought ones you can recommend that would be good enough? I'm on the UK fermenting friends FB group but it's been so long since I fermented anything I've forgotten how 🤣

I seem to have problems with dairy too. My gut has always been a bit temperamental, but it's got extra picky recent years. I just wish it hadn't decided that it preferred junk food  :'(

I do eat sourdough sometimes but I'm not a massive fan of the taste. I am wondering if the problems stem from taking some antibiotics last year. Things do seem to have been a bit worse since then, even though I took probiotics at the time.

I don’t mind the taste of sourdough. White bread just gets stuck somehow now. I’ve found that my digestion is not what it was i now drink oat milk after bloating on supermarket cows milk.  I always had bottled green top unpasteurised delivered for years & straight out of the churn or tank when much younger.

I feel sure that you could gradually change things.  I think foodstuffs probably work better than the probiotics even though I take one type.
Could a health shop advise you further.  ?  Adding Pulses might be a start. We’ve got a local health food shop that sell sauerkraut as Kathleen suggested.  One local lady makes it in several types & flavours it is not just cabbage that you can ferment. One demonstration we saw had a cabbage base but onion & carrot in too plus turmeric.
