Collagen
« on: November 04, 2024, 08:56:06 AM »

Any experiences with collagen supplements? There are some pricey subscription only products out there and I’m curious about the benefits who wouldn’t want improved energy, skin, nails, hair etc? But I’m sceptical too. Anyone tried any collagen supplements? Thanks

Given the amount of research papers on collagen it always makes me laugh that we call it 'alternative'. Anyhoo...I use Ancient and Brave bovine collagen after having a good look around. I think powdered bovine is best although clearly a problem for vegans and vegetarians. There are other forms but I haven't tried those (marine etc). I take mine for bone health so you also have to be clear which you choose (type I, II or III) too!

I go by the biochemist research and don't wait for a GP to suggest. It was 16 years ago I discovered the link between immunity/breast cancer and low vitamin D. I didn't wait until my crusty GP caught up. Now it's standard!

It's very difficult to assess as there are many and varied factors influencing bones, skin, etc. A straightforward vitamin supplement might do the trick. I have to admit to putting my faith in this product after doing my research and taking account of my own blood results etc. It's a personal choice and probably too hard to bring into mainstream medicine at this stage. And I agree it's v expensive! I don't drink, smoke, or do much really so choose to spend on my health.

I use Hunter & Gather bovine collagen, like HellsBells I take it for bone and joint support (not interested in cosmetic benefits personally).

I tried to do research before starting it but it's not easy to weed out the 'research' done by collagen suppliers! I decided I wanted 'pure' hydrolysed collagen rather than anything with vitamins/supplements added and H&G seemed to fit my requirements. Their subscription service is very good and very flexible so I order two packs at a time to benefit from free postage and when they remind me that my next subscription is due to be shipped I just delay it until I want it.

It takes around 3mths for it to work and there's no  'flash bang wallop' moment where a switch us flicked and you feel the benefits. I only realised it was working when I stopped taking it, 6mths in, on a long visit to my son in Australia. Three weeks into my visit I began to get achey joints, particularly when getting up from the floor after playing with Grandson.

It definitely works for me and I'll keep taking it for as long as I can afford to.

I take Applied Nutrition, in powder form, from Holland & barrett

You need to do your research , to ensure it is good, where the fish/cow is from, etc

Applied nutrition is a bit cheaper than hunter & gather, especially with the offers from Holland & barrett, although I think hunter & gather might be a bit better product.

For the last 5 months, I have taken collagen gummies (Holland and Barratt - not cheap) and my hairdresser, without knowing, said that my hair was feeling thicker.
