Hello

I think I could have oestrogen dominance presently. Over recent months I'm getting a hike up in histamine symptoms the first half of my cycle. It improves weeks 3-4. I'm 52, perimenopausal, have my own cycle and on prescribed body identical HRT (Oestrogel continuous and Utrogestan vaginal, cyclical). I can't use Utrogestan continually, it messes my bleeds up and makes me feel awful.

I'm wondering if I'd do better on progesterone monotherapy?
Has anyone here found progesterone only (e.g. bioidentical progesterone cream), helped with their histamine symptoms?

If yes, I'm wondering how to transition from my prescribed HRT to progesterone only cream?

I can't take synthetic antihistamines, they give me side effects. Natural antihistamines aren't helping. I've stopped fermented foods but ok with other histamine foods e.g. tomatoes, avocados, spinach.

I need to sort this out. The histamine is making my life a misery.

I don't understand histamine  .  How does it make U feel and how do U know that it is histamine causing symptoms?

However, alcohol/ethanol has NO histamine!  It's when they are made into wines ........ so do be careful what you read and where you source your information.  One site that DH read was a chap calling himself a Doctor in Australia, 'naturopath clinic'. 



Continue with an overall healthy diet.  Where did U read about 'histamine foods' ? 

R U able to explain why you feel that you are 'oestrogen dominant', I have been really lucky thus far in not experiencing much other than cold flushes years ago ........

Histamine for me causes prickly burning skin, thumping heart, anxiety, brain fog, insomnia. It feels like an allergic reaction.  I used to think these symptoms were perimenopause but I've realised I don't think they are, I feel they're actually histamine.  Which can be common in perimenopause when our own natural hormones are fluctuating.  Oestrogen encourages mast cells to release histamine, histamine encourages higher oestrogen.  It's a catch 22 situation.  Progesterone is a mast cell stabiliser.  So this is the patterning of my histamine: higher in weeks 1-2 (when oestrogen is getting high), then it improves weeks 3-4 (when progesterone levels rise).

It is similar to an allergic reaction - in that the body is trying to rid itself of a trigger.  U state that your symptoms are cyclical ...... which figures at 'this time of life'.   

However; low oestrogen can cause many of the symptoms you describe again = cyclical. 

It's confusing  .  DH is reading through various 'articles' and is smiling widely.  One MD stopped working in medicine to set up an 'alterantive' clinic = making more money.  Cynic.  Us 

Do U find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use?  How badly R your symptoms affecting daily life? It's the Change, does what it says on the tin  .

Thank you for your replies CLKD. Unfortunately nothing comes up when I key in histamine into the search box. Strange considering it's reported to  be a common issue with menopausal women.

What are the symptoms that made you start HRT initially? I realised that actually I didn’t have a histamine issue despite being told I did by the doctor (private clinic btw), instead I just didn’t need oestrogen yet. As soon as I stopped the oestrogen, the issues went away. When the hot flushes kicked in big time a couple of years later, I started HRT again. During perimenopause I managed on progesterone only. Lots of women do, either with a Mirena or the progesterone only pill etc. maybe try going down that route instead of trying to discover what might be the problem, as it might not be a problem at all.
