Can VA become worse following exercise
« on: September 23, 2024, 05:19:30 PM »

Hello All
I have been on vagirux for 18 months for VA with some minor flare ups in that time. Symptoms usually external soreness and frequent urination, heavy feeling, pressure in pelvic area. Over the last month I have upped the amount of exercise I am doing every day quite substantially...which I'm pleased with and enjoying. However my VA symptoms have flared up again, more severe than usual and lasting now for nearly 2 weeks. Just wondering if it could be because I'm doing more exercise? Thanks in advance for any help and replies.

R U using the treatment every night?  What type of material is your exercising gear made of, Lycra may cause extra sweating all over which could impact?  From where I'm sitting, it sounds like hard work  ;)

Some find that using a moistorosor or 'estriol' on the outer labia/vulva helps as well as vagirux, vagifem, ovestin internally.

U may need to alter your regime.

If you are having more showers because of more exercise that can irritate. is your exercise gear breathable or does it get sweaty in that area!
I have a constant battle to keep VA at bay. I am on 4 pumps Oestrogel ,utrogestan plus vagifem every other day.
When I get an attack I add a small daily blob of estriol cream to the outer areas which helps.
Beware hot baths, spicy food, acidic fruits . I find all can trigger an attack.
Good luck in finding the key. You will find it, it just takes persistence

Firstly use the treatment every night for at least 3 weeks.  Getting the vaginal walls plumped up should help .  Take some pain relief if symptoms niggle to ease the nip as the urine flow shuts off.

KY jelly.  Estriol.  Yes or Sylc moisturisers have been found helpful too.  It's a bit of trial and error until one becomes comfy.

To answer your question, yes exercise will make GSM symptoms worse, the body heating up will cause flare ups quite easily.
I am using more of my Estriol cream because of the high humidity levels and the recent hot weather and that's all alongside my usual dose of daily Vagifem, moisturiser also an important ingredient in your regime.

If you love your exercises then go armed with the treatments and dosage that will relieve those horrid symptoms and don't be afraid to use as much as it takes.

Hi Blackcat11,

Really empathise with you, also in the same boat here, trying to regain some fitness, particularly strength training as we are all told this helps with menopause and particularly mental health when coming to terms with this horrible condition. It feels at the moment like I have a good day when I can do more and then pay for it by a flare up. I'm trying to work out whether the exercise is triggering the flare ups. There is no consistency to this thing. Even walking somedays is tough.

I'm getting the sense from some of these threads that the more VA flares up the more oestrogen is required. Is this the case? I'm only on one pump estradiol at the moment and wanted to keep it low. Looks like we need to up the ante and experiment. i know some people take much more.

I did find recently a really informative website called 'Celebrate Muliebrity' with a lady called Michelle Lyons, who in Episode 49 of her podcast talks about pelvic floor rehab strategies. One of the top five is exercise.

I think the big lesson for all of us is to learn is perhaps try and modify the exercise and maybe do things more gently?

Fingers crossed you are able to find some balance.

Thanks very much for your reply. It's such a delicate balance for overall wellbeing. I want to try to stay as fit as I can.. on the acceptance that I'm nearly 53 and try as I might I'm not going to look like I did at 43, 33 etc!! But then the body seems to just say "no, don't bother..or I'm going to spring another flare up on you!" This flare up is lasting longer, evenings being the worst time of the day.
As well as the vagirux I'm also on half Conti patch and desogestrel ...again a full patch seemed to throw things out of balance and I ended up with bleeding and strangely more severe IBS symptoms. Every new day a new challenge, ache, pain or aggravation. Good job we can share together on here which has been a huge source of comfort at times.
