Lichen Sclerosis and VA
« on: September 02, 2024, 06:15:44 PM »

Hi all, just been dx with Lichen Sclerosis and have been perscribed Dermovate to use once a day for 4 wks then to go back for checks. I've  had VA for a year now with bad  flare ups now and again but the last few days have been terrible with the intense itching and burning. I'm  using estriol and yess vm and I'm interested to hear how anyone else with LS is getting on.

Hi. Sorry about the diagnosis, there are several ladies here with knowledge.  MayB put lichen sclerosis into the search box to read the threads: make notes.

What advice were you given ?

Dermovate should sort you out quite quickly, I find I only need to use a couple of weeks when LS flares up, my dose is twice a day for 4 weeks though. I also use it when I have a VA flare up as it quickly heals the soreness and is very soothing.
After using Dermovate I usually leave a gap of a few of hours before applying Estriol at night.
I can't tolerate YES VM, it causes intense itching and irritation but I'm ok with YES WB.  Perhaps stick to just the Dermovate and Estriol until things calm down.

Thankyou :)
My gp thinks it's Lichen Sclerosus ( white patches intense itching and soreness )
Thanks for the advice on timing of application, I thought for a while that yess vm was irritating me also the estriol because I've had a few horrible flair ups this year but this latest one has been the worst
My dose is once a day for 4 wks then I've got to go back, to see gp.
Can I ask were you dx by gp or gyne/dermatologist.
I was nervous when she perscribed steroid cos of skin thinning but she assured me it's safe to use short term. I will stop the moisturiser for now then try the water based later. Thanks for the advice..

I was diagnosed by a vulva specialist at hospital but never had a biopsy so not officially confirmed. I've never had the white patches either so still not 100% sure. Whatever it is that flares up is sorted with Dermavate so I'm happy.
Dont worry about the skin thinning,  your doctor is right, it's ok to use short term which is usually all that's needed. I was told a small tube should last 3 months for the vulva and if you are using more than that it's too much.
I can go for months, even a year sometimes without a flare up so have to order a new tube as it's shelf life is 3 months once opened. I have used it after this date but it's not as potent.
Stress is my main trigger for LS and anything that lowers your immune system.

I have VA and LS. As Diedre has already said, steroid is perfectly safe to use regularly on vulval skin. In a very simplistic way, LS causes thickening of the skin so the steroid helps thin it (NOT a proper medical explanation!).  Once the LS is under control a weekly application of steroid is recommended for maintenance.

There is a fab FB group which contains lots of info from official sources that is worth joining.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/221930761513570/?ref=share
If the link doesn't work, search for 'Lichen Sclerosis UK Support Group for women' on Facebook.

And just to note it's Lichen - your post has liNchen, with an n in the middle. Not being being pedantic, just want to make sure you can find things when you search!

I was advised by the specalist to use cetraban or Hydromol after every trip to the loo to put a barrier on the skin It worked really well I had terrible problems adjusting to the medication for VA and had to use steroid cream for a short while but once things got under control I settled on the barrier and Vagisil with oatmeal Internally I have Intrarosa pessaries  Strangely after my prolapse surgery 6 weeks ago I haven’t had any VA symptoms It’s been a lovely break after a year of pain and discomfort Sure it will come back but enjoying the respite

My VA was much better after my prolapse gradually reduced.  I didn't have surgery just local estrogen and physiotherapy. I think it's because of less chafing and the feeling  like you've no longer got a tampon half hanging out causing soreness.
I wash with cetraban and it can also be used as a moisturiser.

I’ve got LS.
Just had a very mild flare up, so I’ve used dermovate for a few days, & it’s cleared up. 🥳
I was told to use ZeroAQS Emollient cream for washing, but Jesus, it made me worse, brought me out in a rash, soreness, ect……so I stopped it and now use Yes, no problems with that.
I’ve been stressed lately, so I’m wondering if it was that. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Stress causes my flareups without a doubt, including VA ones too.
