Trying not to worry- biopsy results
« on: January 17, 2024, 06:31:12 PM »

Hi all
I'm completely new here.
51. Tried HRT (evorel sequi) last year,
I was still having pretty regular periods at this point but brain fog was crippling,  plis hot flushes. Pactches were great for a while but then after over 6 months I started bleeding randomly, and heavily.

I contacted my Gp expecting them to suggest swapping regimes, but instead they offered me the mini pill to control bleeding.I  wasn't keen on adding yet more hormones to my body so declined. A couple of weeks later it dawned on me that it was happening every time I switched hormone types (so every two weeks, for a week  :'( ) so I just stopped using the patches, and voila, the bleeding stopped.

I hadn't bled at all for 11.5 months.
In november i contacted my GP and after a bit of a battle was prescribed sandrena gel
However I did not start the gel because I realised the timing was not great for my upcoming holiday in Jan do had delayed taking it.
Then suddenly, 16 December I started bleeding heavily out of the blue.
It lasted about a week.
After a bit of discussion and me pushing the GP referred me to the PMB clinic as urgent, and they did a transvaginal ultrasound. I was expecting to have that,  pass with flying colours and carry on with HRT.

I had the scan on Friday and they found that a small area of my endometrium is too thick at 5.4mm. They took two biopsies. The doctor wasn't overly worried she said and kept saying it was probably from the HRT hormones...but that makes no sense as I hadn't taken any for a year or more.

She said I could start the sandrena gel whilst I wait for results as it wouldn't make any real difference even if they do find cancer.

So I started using it on Saturday and since Sunday I've been bleeding - only a little.

I'm really trying not to worry.
Does anyone have any insight. Should I tell the GP about this bleeding or just see if it settles? Not sure what to do...
Sorry for the long post!!

.... and breath.  5.4mm isn't that thick and it's good that you have had the scan.  How long will you need to wait for the results and will this be sent to your GP or yourself?  It may B from your hormonal upheavals as you go into peri.

How was the C word mentioned, in general conversation or were you given any advice about the 'what ifs'?  Sometimes medics through these words into thin air without explanation!

When my periods waxed and waned I went from regular, heavy periods with excruciating pain to lighter bleeds, which disappeared for months then back again  ::) until I realised that they had stopped.

Is there any info in the leaflet in the box of HRT?   If no one who has used Sandrena comes along, you can put the product name into the search box to read any threads.  Make notes ;-)

Let us know how you get on.

I agree, 5.4mm isn't overly thick.  I think it's 5mm (for post meno ladies).

The lining could have been thick due to the recent bleeding, or maybe a polyp or fibroid.

Thank you.
The threshold they said is 4mm thickness.
C word was mentioned as worst case scenario..
I have been peri for a few years - hot flushes, VERY heavy periods at times, brain fog - just the regularity(ish) had stayed the same.

They said up to  3 weeks for results, and they will write to me and my GP. (I also have the NHS app and can see my test results, which can be helpful)

As you say, probably just a blip - I was so shocked they found anything to remark on at all.
Sandrena gel leaflet does say it can cause spotting (though this bleeding is continuous  light bleed)
See how we go I guess. Thanks for responding x

Just had a scan and I was just over 5mm.  Apparently according to the radiologist the new guidelines for referral to Gynae is now 5mm.  So off for a biopsy.
