Could I need more estrogen?
« on: August 11, 2023, 08:58:21 AM »

Hi all
I’m on estraderm 50 patches everyday and Utrogestan 14 days off the on etc. I’ve been on HRT since January. I am 47 and peri. I still get periods and I went on HRT mainly for low mood. I’ve posted a lot here about health anxiety and not being sure about HRT suiting me!
I recently had my review and the doc says to give it another 3 months: I get pms symptoms in the second half of ‘the cycle’ and she’s wondering if it’s Utrogestan. However I also get symptoms in the estrogen only bit- sore boobs, joint pain raising its head, slight cramping, anxious etc. could my estrogen be too low?
In my younger days I had really long cycles - 75 days sometimes- and I had periods stop for almost a year. I was told PCOS, then I was told endo and then I was told it was just me! I’ve had a baby at 39 and after having him periods were bang on perfect.
Have I been low on estrogen in the past? Am I still? Am I mad? Can I go away to a cave to live till this is over?

Apart from the joint pain, the other symptoms could also indicate high estrogen. You've described exactly how I feel when my estrogen is too high, yet my finger joints start hurting when my estrogen is too low. I also get the pms symptoms with utrogestan but, in general find it good to use and quite calmimg. It's so confusing isn't it. What did the GP say she'd do about the utrogestan if she does think it's that at your next review?

Gah!! It’s so confusing. She says she’ll change the Utrogestan to another progesterone. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just to confuse you further, one of my symptoms of high oestrogen was joint pain. Apparently caused by bloating, too much fluid in the joints. Progesterone is a diuretic which made my joint pain, bloating, sore boobs calm down.

I know….too little oestrogen/too high oestrogen has some very similar symptoms in some people. It confuses me!

Ermin2trude I had no idea high estrogen could cause joint pain? Do you mind me asking which joints it happened in for you please? I had always put my sore finger joints down to low estrogen but you've made me think now!

If you're 47 (pretty young still) and only on 50 patches, chances are that it's low estrogen rather than high....
