Swollen ankles
« on: August 13, 2022, 08:48:27 PM »

I’ve not suffered from this problem before, apart from when I was pregnant. The hot weather is the cause. My feet are less swollen in the mornings and I’m trying to keep them elevated. Anyone else suffering? Any suggestions on how to cope? Roll on cooler weather! It’s weird as I normally have skinny feet and legs! Now lying on the bed with ice blocks on them. Not a pretty sight! :o

Are you drinking plenty of water? The heart has to work harder if the blood is thick.

Yes I am suffering very much at the moment and on holiday. Had this before but never to this extent but its very hot. I can't get some of my sandals on so just wearing flip flops. Ok in the morning but by nightime I'm very swollen. Just keep putting my feet up on chairs to keep elevated and although stiff when get up
they are better after walking a bit. Keep drinking water.

Swollen ankles are one thing you should get checked out at the doctor, as they can be a sign that your heart is not working as well as it should - it is not pushing the blood around your extremities properly. It's called 'edema', which just means 'swelling'. But do get it checked out...

Are you taking any blood pressure meds? Some of those can make your ankles swell.

This happened when we had the 2 days of extreme heat a few weeks back. My BP is usually fine. I’m not on meds for that. The NHS say if it goes down and is both ankles, that it doesn’t require medical attention. One ankle means possible thrombosis. I would ring 111 if it didn’t go down at night. Although I am drinking more, maybe not enough. 2 more days of heat to get through. I shall think of you Deirdre! Never had this problem when I have taped with my son, where they regularly have temperatures this high in summer, but they have air conditioning and it’s a more humid heat. He’s over in this country at the moment and says he has never been so hot. Maybe it’s because this is such a dry heat.

Mine have gone down by the morning so its definitely the heat causing it.

Get those legs elevated as much as possible even in bed.

I think that I am drinking enough but by early hours I am parched  :-\
