Dee, with regard to ADs I take mirtazapine, primarily for sleep, but also anxiety. Unfortunately it does have a side effect of weight gain and no matter how little I eat I've managed to put on a stone since starting it in Jan. It was worth it just to get a full nights sleep again, but it has stopped working this week out of the blue. It may be because I was told to reduce my oestrogen pending some biopsy tests but not sure It might work for you though - definitely helped with anxiety and reduced palpitations.
I'm about to try magnesium glycinate so will post back and let you know if it works!
wrt best hrt to try - it really is trial and error. I don't absorb very well and have now tried everything - gel, spray and patches. It can be very frustrating and long winded but it may be that you hit the sweet spot quickly. If I had to choose I would opt for patches because I like the no mess, slap it on and forget about it approach. I found gel messy and annoying and the spray made my skin itch (but dried incredibly quickly).
My anxiety has taken the form of being hyper health aware and worrying about the slightest thing. Even though I rationalise it the whole process makes you feel constantly worried and drained. When HRT was working for me I felt so much better and those thoughts went away.Definitely mention this to your doctor along with your other more obvious menopause symptoms. Make sure she realises it's part and parcel of an overall set of issues and not JUST anxiety.
