Vaginal Atrophy Tips & Advice
« on: December 02, 2021, 12:18:12 PM »

As suggested by JoJo42 and something I was thinking about myself this morning. A thread for tips and advice on how to manage a condition that has come as a shock to most post menopause women who had never heard of it before and are in need of any help from those that have suffered this condition for a long time.

One tip I got from reading the threads on here was when you get a VA flare up was to use wet toilet paper to dab on the vagina after peeing. I do this and it definitely helps cool things down.

There is a private Vaginal Atrophy Facebook support group - highly recommended.

I have heard of the group but because its Facebook I won't join.
I already have an account and I don't want to get involved in opening another
I don't trust Facebook because of their incessant intrusion.

There is The Burning Club that seems to be a support thread for VA.

I use dermol (prescribed by GP) which I use for washing down there - it is very gentle & soothing - although it is actually prescribed for lichen sclerosus I do believe it helps. I also have vagifem twice a week.

My GP gave a bit of advice.  She suggested applying a small amount of estrogen cream on the Vagifem applicator.  Works for me.  The applicator is much easier to insert and I seem to be quite a bit more comfortable.

I was so disappointed when I suffered side effects using Ovestin that when I suffered another flare up last week I crushed a vagifem tablet and mixed it with Sylk moisturiser and applied locally.
It wasn't easy as the tablet is so hard and the consistency was like thick dried honey but I rubbed it well in and next day I was so much better. Probably would have been anyway but desperate times need desperate measures!

There is wonderful advice in this thread regarding Ovestin cream. I have started to use it again and I am not suffering any side effects because of the advice given in the posts! Thanks ladies  :)

Unless these threads are bumped up all the time they are easily missed. It doesn't matter if this subject gets repeated time and time again, as long as its read by anyone, me included, newish to the forum who hasn't a clue what they are searching for.

I'll bump them - you can put 'bladder issues' and 'vaginal atrophy' into the search box 📦 - or send a PM to Emma asking to 'pin' them.

Too many threads and issues get lost as they scroll down the pages.  There are lots of related topics for bladder problems, doing a search will find them.  Get those feet up, cuppa to hand ;-).

It's now four months since I was diagnosed with Vaginal Atrophy and it's been a long journey waiting for the treatments to work.
I went for a long walk today without feeling uncomfortable, no itching, no burning, the signs are very good considering what I was like before.
This is now my regular routine every day and I am very happy to report that all is going well so far. Hope this helps others who are just starting out on the VA journey.

Copied from another thread:
I am using Ovestin cream each night, just a small amount mixed with a small amount of Sylk moisturiser applied on the outside and the effects have been amazing, someone on here said its a game changer and she is absolutely right.

I insert the Vagifem tablet every morning, four months on I am at last feeling the benefits of the treatments.

It takes a while for the vaginal walls to plump up and be less dry.  Tnx for the update.

Great to hear Gracie.  I think we need more successful stories re:  treatment so other ladies just beginning this horrid journey will find solace in the fact that GSM/VA can be under control with proper treatment and PERSEVERANCE.

It can certainly be controlled.  It's recognising it soon enough and not many of us were aware of the condition.  Many in the health service as also unaware.  Do read "Me and my menopausal vagina " written by a Member here.  Then buy copies for as many people as you can ;-)
