Severe stomach pains
« on: September 30, 2021, 10:42:05 PM »

Hi all, sorry this isn't about me but my son. He's 25, diagnosed with coeliac disease 4 years ago. The last few weeks he's had terrible stomach pain, I mean really bad. He has an appointment with his consultant next Thursday,  I have been calling to see if there's anything sooner. Today I took him to a&e,  after 5 and half hours he was given antispasmodic tablets and told to take paracetamol. Can anyone think of anything else that will help? I've given him a hot water bottle to place over his stomach. He just feels terrible, tbh I'm concerned somethings going on. He should have had bloods done quite a few months ago so whilst I was at the hospital I went to gastro and got a copy of the bloods that needed taken, hopefully it will give some answers and consultant will have the results for his appointment.  I'm just at a loose end as to what I can give him to take.
Thanks all

Hi there,I'm so sorry about your son, coeliac is awful,my aunt suffered from it terribly, was he tested for it? It may be that it's an IBD,has he had a colonoscopy? My daughter has crohns and was in so much pain before diagnosis. He wouldn't have accidentally eaten some wheat or gluten? A good tablet is mebeverine to stop cramps but he really should be seen by a specialist, just in case

Hi, yes coeliac confirmed by hospital and camera,he hasn't had any wheat/gluten, we are very strict,  he has his own toaster, margarine, cupboard, freezer etc. He was given mebeverine but not helping, he doesn't have cramps but pain. Spoke with gp today who has said he needs to do 2 stool samples, 1 to test for inflammation the other for crohns, my husband has crohns. He has given him doxycycline to try.  Just hope results from bloods & stools will be there for Thursday so consultant can see whats going on. He's never been like this before, vomiting and diarrhoea aswell, he's lost a fair bit of weight, its so concerning :'(
Hope your daughter has her medication sorted.
Thanks

Hope he's ok Penguin, the symptoms sound exactly like my daughters, she was being sick and diarrhoea, blood too and she went down to 7stone from 9stone,was in hospital for 2 weeks but she's on these granules now and her crohns is under control,I think if they catch it quickly the better the outcome. How is he today?

Hi, he has no blood but mucus (sorry) just waiting for him to 'go' so I can get samples up to the hospital.  He's still in pain, its just so awful to see him like this. He did have a little giggle with us yesterday so hopefully he's going to improve very soon. My husband ( his dad) has crohns, was diagnosed in 2003, he takes pentasa granules, they put hubby on the infliximab, wow, worse thing ever, ,made him so very ill so he came off it, his crohns doesn't bother him much but he did develop sacroillitis which is secondary to crohns. If my son does have it at least we know what it is and treatment can start.
Thanks  :)

Back at docs today :'(, bloods are ok, which is good, hospital is only processing one of his samples so he has to repeat the other one. Doc says he needs an ultrasound so I'm paying for him to have one, should be tomorrow morning, just waiting on paperwork from docs. Hopefully we can find out whats wrong and get it treated .I so wish it was me and not him :'(

Well done on pushing these investigations forwards.  There is a reason for acute pain - pain is a warning after all.

Thanks
He's still in a lot of pain,  vomiting a few times a day, and the other end. Has his scan first thing tomorrow,  thankfully.  I just wish they could find out whats causing this so he can get the correct treatment. The results should be quick. Dr said as soon as we get results to let him know.
