Alcohol and menopause
« on: June 08, 2021, 07:37:30 AM »

I'm 51 and have been on Conti patches for 2 months.  I was on gel and tablets for a year, but the Progesterone tablets gave me really vivid dreams so I was exhausted in the end!  Found a sympathetic Menopause Dr who's now changed me to Conti.  Had terrible headaches to start with but now getting easier and sleep is coming back.

However, we were hosted by lovely neighbours recently who were generous with the wine :D  Even though I'd drunk a lot of water, and taken paracetamol before going to bed I had a really bad hangover.  Part of the hangover was what I can only describe as an increased anxiety attack.  I felt like I was unable to think (increased brain fog) and felt very frightened.  The whole thing lasted about an hour but was dreadful.  I've never had anything like it.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Morning.

Alcohol and medication often doesn't mix ;-).  Lesson learned ?

Some find that having enjoyed a drink for years, when they hit perimenopause all that changes.  Some become sensitive 2 various food stuffs too.

:welcomemm: 2 the wonderful world of ........... hormones  ::)

Many are unable to tolerate Progesterone part of HRT.  It's Trial and Error which can be tiring.  Browse round, make notes.

Fellow northerner here and I feel your  pain! I’m the same so have changed what I drink. I’ll go for G&T now over wine. I definitely don’t drink anywhere near what I used to as my tolerance is much lower, especially with wine, but I do enjoy socialising occasionally with a drink. My anxiety increases too and it’s something I know happens. Maybe just get to know your tolerance now and what will happen if you do have a drink. I feel life is for living and I’d rather have a happy time even if it means I’ll be a bit sore afterwards. That said,  I’m nowhere near my early days of partying in the toon! 💃

Hi  :welcomemm: I'm afraid many of us find that alcohol starts to become problematic during the menopause transition.  When perimenopause symptoms started in my mid 40s I quickly found I was no longer able to tolerate it.  Made my flushing & especially night sweats even worse :o, including the horrible palpitations & anxiety that came with them.  Making sure I'd eaten enough & had good fluid intake made no difference.  Much to my dismay :(  Now postmenopause, late 50s & on HRT, I no longer drink.  Can't honestly say I don't miss a glass of wine, but as regular alcohol intake is said to be potentially harmful for breast health there is some consolation in avoiding it for those of us who find it doesn't suit us as we age.

Thanks for these replies.   All helpful.

I honestly had no idea about the mental impact of the menopause. I was aware of all the other side effects but this has been the learning curve for me.   Brain fog in particular, but also the anxiety - neither of which HRT has really helped with yet.  I haven't had a history of anxiety so have been surprised about it.
As someone said recently, menopause affects us 'mind, body and spirit'.  I'm learning that now!
Have found comfort in finding other people with these symptoms.
