New member - lots of questions about HRT
« on: November 19, 2020, 11:05:30 PM »

Hi

Firstly thanks for a wonderfully helpful forum. Thanks to everyone for sharing their stories to help others.

My situation - I have been on Trisequens for about 3 years. I was prescribed at 49 when in peri (now 52). Issues were flooding, low mood and sweats at night. Sweats and low mood have resolved. I have also been diagnosed with pernicious anemia (low B12) since. This could certainly account for the low mood. Periods are giving me grief still.

I have a period every month regular as clockwork but they are painful. They are  certainly not flooding periods but they are not lite either.  I suffer from some mild IBS generally but it is ramped up since I’ve been on HRT. I generally feel flat, washed out and awful for about 2 weeks of every cycle. I’m well over it all. I am actually thinking of going cold turkey and just stopping the HRT. I wonder if I would be better with out it? Have a doctors appt in a few weeks and keep asking for her to review it. My question is - can HRT actually be making me feel like this? Any thoughts/experiences?

:welcomemm:  Do U keep a mood/food/symptom diary to chart progress?  MayB think why you began HRT and whether those symptoms have eased?  If you stop, the risk is you may return to reason that you went on HRT.

If you put the product name into the search box on the Forum you will see what pops up.  Take notes ;-).  Is the pernicious anaemia being treated on a regular basis?  You could put that into the box too .......

We have threads on mostly everything, including IBS, vaginal atrophy, bladder issues ......... browse round. Make notes.

Thanks for the response. Yes the pernicious anemia is being treat. 3 monthly injections. I’ve had a bit of a search around and will continue to do so. Diary is a great idea.

Hi Vellela. The HRT you are on has norethisterone as the progesterone and in some women it can give the side effects you mention especially the low mood. PMT type symptoms are also common with norethisterone. There are other types of HRT you can try so don't give up if you feel that at least some of the symptoms have been alleviated by using HRT. Your periods (bleeds) will arrive 'regularly as clockwork' as these are governed by the HRT and are not periods as such but withdrawal bleeds from the discontinuation of the progesterone element in order to keep your womb lining healthy.

Thanks Taz. That is very helpful. I’ll do some more research and chat to my Dr.

Have you considered having a Mirena coil fitted? It does the job of the progesterone part of HRT without much of it entering your general bloodstream but, more importantly for you, it dramatically decreases the flow/severity of periods. In fact for a lot of people it stops them altogether. I just get a bit of spotting every now and again and that’s it.

Yes I tried the mirena. I eventually had it removed I had a lot of cramping all of the time. After 3 years I had it removed. Sadly it did t work for me,

I reluctantly got the mirena coil  and once it settled down my periods finally stopped. Bleeding went on for two months and took iron tablets but now period free.  Those heavy bleeds and lumps were awful
