Sometimes nuts give off a smell which the birds will avoid. Cheap ones can hang around for ages. I find that the birds like to be able to grab a nut and fly under cover. The wire feeders do attract tits before the weather gets very cold but they have to cling to peck leaving them vulnerable.
I've given up on the nyger feeders. The ones with plastic lids don't last long, the lids get brittle on cold nights and snap - I've tried putting cling film and foil over the top to keep the nyger dry but it doesn't work

……… I looked for alternative nyger feeders this morning, nowt suitable!
Jay is back. Several starlings. Haven't seen the magpies yet today. Lots of tits, a few chaffinches but no green finches again this year.
