we have a jay - hopping about under the nut feeders  ………..

Ours make such a noise - them and the magpies really do wake the neighbourhood!

We are 1 mile as the crow flies from the forest - where there are jays, tree-creepers ……. we've had magpies in the garden all Summer, 2-day there were 5 jackdaws too.  The birds were busy on the feeders in a fury, a sign of colder weather on the way!

   ….. I've watched a [grey] squirrel.  Yesterday I threw out a basket of nut shells in which I knew there were a few whole nuts left: he's found a few, sat up with a look of surprise on his face like "Look what I've found Guys"  …….. I try not to humanise animals, but

Well I don't know if it was the change of peanuts (last lot were cheap from farm shop so might have been old) but have been visited by 4 species of tit! (blue, great, coal, long-tailed). Crushed up the old peanuts in the food processor to put on the table as I still have quite a lot left and the collar doves and 1 or 2 jackdaws seem to be appearing and enjoying them as well as the small birds (can't believe I'm doing food preparation for the birds not just hanging up or putting out stuff!).

Sometimes nuts give off a smell which the birds will avoid.  Cheap ones can hang around for ages.  I find that the birds like to be able to grab a nut and fly under cover.  The wire feeders do attract tits before the weather gets very cold but they have to cling to peck leaving them vulnerable. 

I've given up on the nyger feeders.  The ones with plastic lids don't last long, the lids get brittle on cold nights and snap - I've tried putting cling film and foil over the top to keep the nyger dry but it doesn't work  ……… I looked for alternative nyger feeders this morning, nowt suitable!

Jay is back.  Several starlings.  Haven't seen the magpies yet today.  Lots of tits, a few chaffinches but no green finches again this year.

We have an ever increasing colony of jackdaws in our village. What a racket they make too! What I find amazing is that with no birds in sight, I put out some scraps and as if by magic, first one jackdaw appears from nowhere followed by several more that also seem to appear from nowhere. How they spot from afar that one small feeder  in one small garden now has food in it just amazes me.

cleaned, disinfected and refilled the bird feeders yesterday.  Suddenly there was a queue on the fence

The starlings here arrive in 1s ……..have a bite then fly off - a few moments later there are 2/3/several - I think 1 draws straws each morning, visits to see what's on offer before letting the others know
