What sort of price are you paying for bird nuts/seeds.
I was quoted £38 for 20kg peanuts and £18 for seeds. Seemed much dearer than last year. I was told some Garden centers were £58 for nuts.

I think that everything is dearer than last year though Blue. It depends on the quality of the seed and the nuts I think. I always get mine mail order from a company called Jacobi Jayne but I do get through an awful lot.

Has anyone tried Wilkinsons for bird food. I got quite a lot from them last year and it was very good and so much cheaper than anywhere else.

I love to feed the birds but we have to eat first  ;D ;D

I have been building up my collection of bird feeders and now have some I am very happy with. I do feed the bigger birds but have to admit I dont like when they chase the little ones away. I have spotted a Gardman feeder which is a hanging one with a mesh base and also a plastic dome that can be adjusted to what height you want to keep the bigger birds out. Has anyone used this kind and does it work?

Out for a walk with OH and dog yesterday morning - beautiful day. Saw what I now think were buzzards - very high in the blue sky, wheeling around and scrapping. A couple of them kept entanglng their claws and wheeling round and down. One of them cried every now and then - a bit like a cat's call which is why I think they were buzzards. But the best bit is - there were TEN of them!

They are definitely on the increase. A farmer friend of mine has up to thirty following his tractor when he is ploughing - wonderful to see. Here in Hampshire the buzzards vie with the red tailed kites - a spectacular sight while doing playground duty each day. I always think how lucky I am to work in a country school surrounded by open fields. It is known as a "wake" of buzzards when there a few of them.

Saw my first geese today, they are back early, usually Oct.

Does anyone remember the film "Fly Away Home" where a young girl in Canada raises orphaned geese and then her and her family teach them how to fly / migrate using light aircraft painted up to look like geese? Its loosely based on a real life story and I think I would say it's one of my favourite films.

Ahhh---thanks Taz. Just watched that clip and it made me smile. Rather a good little resumé of the film isn't it?

Our dunnock is back and we heard the blackbird shouting his warning call this morning  :-* - great tit, blue tit and coal tit are helping themselves to sun-flower seeds.  Can hear the robin but haven't seen him this week.

My robin have been having tremendous battles this week - the young are being forced out to look for a territory of their own.  They are warbling their autumn song...  :D

Split and re-planted some hellebores today, plus some geraniums which were in too dry a bed; bought some winter cyclamen and some that should spread and flower every autumn .......... over-cast but quite muggy!

Went a river walk with my hubby and a kingfisher flew past us twice - beautiful. The blue of it's feathers shone in the sunlight - made our day!
