I thought that you had to have a licence to catch them - it's been on The Archers!

The Environment Agency wanted everyone to have a License to fish for crayfish which was free: guess what, now that they know where everyone is taking them from they want to charge £40.00 - well I consider that those that fish for American signals are doing a good job, one which should be undertaken by the EA.  Also by having a free license the EA now have all the details so any fisherman is now easy bait to be 'fined' if they don't pay the 'stealth' tax ......... what do the Archers 'say'?

It does seem quite complicated but reading the Q&A's on this site http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/recreation/fishing/38045.aspx  it would appear that the licence is to make sure that the right size trap is used to catch the non-native crayfish. Obviously you can't trap the native ones without a super-special licence.

You do need permission from the landowner to fish for them too I think.

That's ok - wouldn't want you to get put away for poaching

Well on The Archers they definitely said that you needed a licence even if you had the land-owners permisson - but what do they know?!

The link states that Bette. You do have to have a licence to trap Signal Crayfish. You do not need a licence to trap English ones as this is against the law. They are a protected species and you are not allowed to take them unless for research purposes which you have to apply to do.

Good old Archers! Thought it'd be right because it seemed like one of their "Public Service Broadcast" moments where they try to educate you about something rural!  ;D

Did you lose a colony Jenny? The local Bats Group may like to be informed that the bats are back - they keep a close eye on these things and are always grateful of new colony information.

Saw my first geese today, they are back early, usually Oct.

And we have a group of swallows feeding over the loch filling up for their migration.
Haven't seen osprey for a couple of weeks.

Wood pecker is coming to table on a regular basis now. I just love them.

Been cutting back, tying in, shredding, watching the goldfinches on the newly filled feeders, think there are some fledglings there!  Autumnal colours starting to show, absolutely calm following the blustery winds of Mon/Tuesday.  The walk through the woods this morning was peaceful but I have little stamina!  Wasps; hover flies; frogs all around our garden ponds.
