Tinnitus
« on: October 24, 2019, 05:48:07 PM »

Has anyone had success in getting rid of tinnitus using HRT? I have been on body identical HRT starting with 2 pumps of estrogel for 4 months now.  Have been told I can increase to 4 pumps.
Intrigued to hear of any other members experiences.
Thanks!

No. But mine started after an infection 30 years ago so really no reason why hrt should help. Has yours started with meno? Try putting it in the search box, I'm sure there have been posts on it.

Hi. Tinnitus was definitely a symptom for me ( well it's a loud whooshing that beats ) when I was peri. It got worse during meno when I wasn't on HRT and now I'm on 2 pumps Oestrogel and it has almost gone. It's definitely not enough for me to be concerned about. Sorry you still have it.

Hi, from Liz Earle's info (she does a lot of menopause/HRT research) it can take a good 6-12 months for it to ease or hopefully go completely. I have had tinnitus since 2012 and it's never completely gone- just learned to live with it (I'm not on HRT) Hope the HRT helps you in the next few months.x

My tinnitus came on in peri and although it hasn't completely resolved it has reduced lots.
I think I first noticed it had reduced 6-12m into HRT.  It does tend to increase if I have a head cold, plus we have dimmable lights at home, and I can hear the buzz of those when they are on, so that doesn't help.  However, when I'm outside I'm hardly aware of it.

My tinnitus came back when I stopped HRT so I think HRT definitely had an effect.  I can live with the tinnitus though as I think the brain learns to filter it out.  Would rather not have it of course!

Thank you all for your replies and apologies for my slow response - my notifications were going to junk mail!
Yes my tinnitus started around the same time as 30 other odd symptoms.
I had a bad reaction to the Mirena coil and had it removed.  Initially, I thought the Mirena had caused a hormonal imbalance and thought it would take 3 months or so to get to back to my normal balance. Unfortunately things got worse.  After many, many doctors visits and compiling excel sheets of symptoms, I was told all my symptoms were "menopausal".  Because of my age they could only offer me antidepressants (can't take combined pill because of migraine with aura), which I refused and asked to be referred to specialist menopause clinic and now feel so much better on my body identical hormones  :)
I'm not that bothered about the ringing in my ears, I've got used to that now.  However, I think it would be lovely to have clear "unblocked" ears/head...I feel as though I've dunked my head in a pot of treacle. Peri seems to have affected my eustachian tubes.
Funnily my hayfever/rhinitus started in my teens, improved in my 20's and 30's, disappeared when I was pregnant, then got worse in my 40's.
Hoping that my ears might like some more estrogen!!

Pot of treacle sounds about right!

As oestrogen levels reduce the eustacheon tubes may well narrow which causes all kinds of problems in the ears.  Tinnitus is background for me then I become aware of it.  I often ask Himself if he can hear my ears buzzing  ;D

Really?  That could explain a lot then.
Funny. Mine only heard the 'pop' of my calf muscle tearing. ( :-\ Falling apart.)

Be careful though alib43, my tinnitus ramps up in volume if my estrogen levels get too high. It also happens with oral progesterone, that's why I stuck with a transdermal patch for so long.
My tinnitus was caused by a loud noise causing ear damage,  but hormonal fluctuations do cause changes in its volume.

Mine is a constant ringing and yes the Utrogestan 200mg made it so much worse, had to reduce to 100mg.
