Help needed

Hi,

I'm 50 and have suffered with endometriosis and adonomyosis for years. I had a mirena coil in for a fair while then it when it's time was up they removed it assuming I'd go in to menopause. I've been hospitalized this week due to excessive bleeding and I'm having periods about every 4 ish months. I was given drips to slow bleeding and sent home with meds to do the same thing. I had a scan and am awaiting results of that then it'll be a gynae referral. I also have a small prolapse.

I've coped with the above. What I'm not coping with is my sudden and severe depression. I take meds for it anyway but it's like it's tripled overnight and I don't want to see anyone or talk to anyone and I'm just eating and not even getting properly dressed. This is so unlike me so I'm also very frightened.

I need help but I don't even know what to ask for.

Hi WitchyWoo. I'm so sorry you are going through this and I hope you will feel less afraid now you have joined us. I'm sure you will get lots of support and friendship on here.

I'm not sure how long ago the Mirena was removed but your depression could be due to the sudden depletion of progesterone. I would also think that periods and bleeding are to be expected once the Mirena is removed. I'm not sure who advised you that you would go into menopause once the Mirena was removed as I thought it's more the falling levels of oestrogen not progesterone which affect bleeding and with your endometriosis and adonomysosis then the continuation of progesterone would seem to make more sense?

It sounds as if you have been referred for the right treatment and I hope you get your scan results soon.  Sorry to be a bit brief but I'm typing this in a traffic jam!

Hi, I can't help with a lot of this as my circumstances were very different. I had heavy bleeds due to fibroids for about 8 years. I had a hysterectomy earlier this year which, for me, was the best thing ever.

I had anemia on and off throughout and always felt dreadful. I'm wondering if your downturn may be anemia related if you have had blood loss? A blood test will show this.

Could you speak to the Samaritans? I know they won't specialise in your issues but you could speak to them immediately.

Sorry I can't be more help, I'm sure somebody with better advice will be along shortly x

Hi again. It would seem as if you are still in peri-menopause which is when a lot of us experience totally unpredictable periods and low mood. Lots of us are still having periods into our middle fifties. I started HRT at 53 (I'm 65 now) and I was still having fairly regular periods. The Mirena obviously kept this side of things in check. Try not to worry. Easy said I know.

You can once you feel better tell the Consultant at the Hospital what happened! because ......... there is a dirth of information about peri and menopause out there  :-\

Depression and anxiety are the pits.     What are you taking, I would suggest a call to your GP to discuss an increase in dose to see you over this sudden drop.  If my brain begins to feel ill I up mine for 5-10 days and it evens out.  Don't suffer!!
