Ingestion Question.
« on: September 02, 2019, 06:28:31 PM »

Hello ladies..

I'm posting on behalf of a friend who is very worried.
She had very severe indigestion for a week and ended up in A and E because she almost collapsed. A series of blood tests and an X ray followed and she was discharged with Omeprazole and told to see her GP in two weeks time. Her question is do you ladies think this could be menopause related?  She is post meno and lately each of her flushes have been  lasting for ten minutes.

Any insights or advice  ladies? This episode has really unnerved her and I would love to pass on your words of wisdom when I see her later this week.

Wishing you all well ladies.

Hi Kathleen.

I have been in the same position as your friend over the last few weeks.  I ended up in A & E with bad burning pain behind my breastbone. The pain was excruciating and I have had indigestion for the last few weeks. I had blood tests which were all normal and was sent home with Omeprazole! I have seen my GP today and she is referring me for an endoscopy as she thinks it could be the start of a stomach ulcer or Candida in my Oesophagus and stomach, which I've had before.

I am 4 years post menopause and and had a bad couple of years, ranging from anxiety to stomach problems.  I am convinced it's menopause. I hope your friend feels better soon.

Hello Jules53

Thank you so much for your reply, your experience does appear to mirror my friend's. Can I ask did Omeprazole relieve your symptoms? When I saw my friend after her hospital visit she had taken her first tablet and was worried because it hadn't stopped the pain. Another friend thinks they take about 2 to 3 days to work when you begin taking them.

I'm sorry that you've had these problems and I hope you get the right treatment soon.

Thanks again for your post and take care.

I too had the same problems Kathleen and was put on Omeprazole for a few months. I then left off it and started on hrt. I found this controlled my horrific indigestion and haven't had any recurrence ( in almost five years) until recently when my patch had to be changed due to the shortage problem. Sadly I'm now finding most of my symptoms returning as this new patch isn't as effective  so am back on the Omeprazole. I'm thinking it's got to be hormonal .
I think your friend will find it can take a week for it to kick in properly Kathleen. I hope the medication eases her pain, I know how frightening it can be

I've also had stomach issues. I was sent for a CT colonoscopy to check out my bowel which came back clear. I've lost loads of weight because I think I limited my diet as was worried it was diet related, but I now am pretty sure it was hormones. I am on HRT and am so much better and am now eating higher fat things and can even manage some take out curry and not having any problem. The menopause clinic doctor suggested it was caused by my estrogen levels being too low.

I was prescribed omeprazole but opted to take HRT instead.

Hi Kathleen

I haven't been consistent taking the Omeprazole as I don't really like taking them. They have helped a bit so I need to keep taking them. The doctor is referring me for an endoscopy. How is your friend now? I hope she gets sorted out soon x

Hello again ladies

Thank you so much for your comments.

I've just spoken to my friend and despite a rough day yesterday, she is feeling better generally. She said Omeprazole took about three days to work and she is seeing the GP on Wednesday. Apparently the hospital weren't sure that it was acid reflux so she wonders if she will be referred for further tests.

I mentioned that I had posted her story on the forum and she asked me to thank you all for your concern.

If there are any developments that may be of interest I will update you all.

Thanks again ladies and take care.

Hia!

I had this for months during perimenopause, it used to occur after eating every and anything. It kinda resolved itself and stopped happening, but coming off hrt the last couple of days it's come back.

I think it is a menopause symptom from what I've heard and read but worth just noting that it can also be a prelude to a heart attack, along with many other tell-tell symptoms that are also mirrored in symptoms we can get during menopause. Please take the time to watch this vid from a menopause specialist. The info in it is so valuable, and something we need to know regardless and need to spread around to all women and get out there. The link is under here.

Hello again ladies

My friend mentioned all the stresses she has been suffering and wondered if that was a factor. She is also post menopause and has several symptoms, including flushes that have become more intense and are  now lasting  ten minutes at a time.  The hospital said she might need to be tested for ulcers and possible  h pylori infection.

Thanks again ladies for your comments.

Wishing you well.

I'm glad your friend is feeling better. I had similar and following endoscopy I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia. It took around two weeks for the omeprazole to really take effect. It's important to take it at least half an hour before having anything to eat or drink apart from the water you swallow it with of course. I take mine half an hour before getting up.

Hello again ladies

Taz2 -  thanks for your comments and I'll mention the possibility of a hiatus hernia when I see her. I do know she was told no alcohol  but I expect the GP will give her more information at her appointment next week.

Thanks again and take care.

Hi folks,
Yep , know the symptoms well.  Mine were ongoing for 4 yrs. stabbing pain in the central ribs, bloating, tight band around guts like a very tight bra strap, nausea. Constipation
All GP's I saw said oh defo gastritis and IBS. Take omeprazole and mebeverine. Slight improvement, not so aggressive, but grumbling away.
4 yrs!!!! Grrrrrrr.
I finally asked for a gallstones scan- nah said the Gp, defo not stones, but go on i'll Send you for one to exclude
Well- I jokingly said to the radiographer “ any grit in there” her response = nope, a bag of marbles!!!
Ended up having it out, low and behold ALL symptoms gone. Turns out my gallbladder was rancid, with a large stone blocking the duct all pain and discomfort was my body trying to get rid of it.......
I am still (can't you tell) quite angry with being fobbed off with boll*ocks for 4 yrs. omeprazole might be good for gastritis, but not for stones.
My point (finally) is if in doubt ask for a scan.
GP's find it very easy to chuck out prescriptions, but not search for the cause......
