Scotland NHSOestrogel
« on: August 26, 2019, 08:37:26 AM »

Hello all, is there anybody out there anywhere in Scotland who has managed to get the Oestrogel on NHS ? Still not seen one single person say they do. :'(

Hi Callisto,

I'm in Scotland and get mine privately. I didn't even go down the GP route as I also take Utrogeston and that is definitely not available on the NHS as far as I know.  I Know my sister in law asked for it from the Sandyford Menopause clinic in Glasgow and was told no to Oestrogel only giving patches or in tablet form.
It's working well so I don't want to start mucking about with it

Hi Gracie,
Thank you for getting in touch.  That is the same as me. Though I am getting pretty irked as recently discovered that it seems Scotland are the only part of U.K who can't get it on NHS - I would be allergic to the patches and neither tablets or patches are bio identical. I, like you, want to stick to the gel having been on it 3 years ( it suits my system and has been working well) but at the moment I need to up my dose and looking at around £25/£30 a month plus consultancy fees which really is getting quite steep in a low income.  I have been told utro has recently become available on NHS and am waiting for doctor to get back to me.

Fingers crossed for you that your GP comes back with good news! I know it really isn't good enough at all. My poor sister in law was given patches and then they were out of stock so they put her on tablets which didn't agree and now she has given up and is just suffering.
I don't want to have to pay forever :( :(
I guess it is because prescriptions are free in Scotland possibly they pick cheaper option, I don't know.

Thank you Gracie,
Oh your poor sister-in-law, that story fills me with sadness and more anxiety, it is one of the reasons I elected to try to take full control of this situation but finances are being strained one way and the other and things are going awry as I've realised I need more oestrogen. ( I'm suffering from those awful flushes that feel like I imagine malaria/ queasy swarming heat, aching bones, jittery and panic. It seems darned ironic that the first time I've actually needed anything in the way of a prescription (aside from a dose of antibiotics ), I'm not able to get  the one thing I need. I would be willing to pay the extra , to top up the cost, if it comes to that- at least we should be given that option. I bet it's a matter of a few pounds maximum more than the other HRToptions. I'm sure some people (on this godsend of a site)have said it's not more expensive but who knows. I feel like there must be a tide to turn. Are we the only ones in Scotland actually getting Oestrogel? A two women revolution is hardly going to cut the mustard and I am constantly exhausted at the moment with little energy let alone managing to change government health policies!

I think you are right, it can only be a few pounds difference if that. I tried googling each council but could only get Lothians HRT list and Oestrogel was mentioned but a no beside it!  I know what you mean about cost as I had to up from 2 pumps to 3 to get my levels up to 350 as after 3 months on 2 pumps its was only 92.
Like you I wanted body identical and really looked into it before I went ahead.
Hope to hear from you soon with good news from GP. Your symptoms sound miserable at the moment, really feel for you.

Thanks Gracie,
I am in Lothians.  :'( Can I ask if you have to pay consultancy fees too? I wish my GP could at least prescribe Oestrogel  - even if I had to pay for prescription, at least I would then not have to pay for seeing  a private doctor. I hope the three pumps work for you? That's how many I was going  to go up to.
Will keep you posted and hope some other women show up here in Scotland on Oestrogel !

Hi Callisto. I was prescribed both Oestrogel ( didn't get on with it so changed to patches. Most of the oestrogen only ones are body identical) and Utrogestan through the NHS. I did however have to go through a private specialist though and maybe through his NHS work, he's able to prescribe it via the GP.
I do know of one other lady on here ( Scottish based as I am ) who went to her GP and got both on the NHS. Does seem to be a bit of a lottery I'm afraid.

Dear Perinow, Boombod, and Michele,
Thank you very much for widening the Scottish net of information.
Do you mind saying which regions you live in?
