BIOTIN
« on: August 04, 2019, 02:02:19 PM »

Hi Ladies, Hope you are all enjoying a leisurely sunday. I have come off hrt as my hair is shedding and i thought it might be the norethisterone in the everol conti patch. My symptoms had subsided but they have now come back so will probably have to go back on hrt. I have heard biotin is good for hair. I am taking a menopause supplement which has biotin in but i'm not sure how much i would need to take for it to have any effect so i would like to know if anyone has had any good results. I read somewhere that onion juice is supposed to help hair loss, has anyone tried that??

Thank you birdy for your reply. I am already on thyroxine and have my levels checked every year. I have also had blood tests and my testosterone levels, iron etc were all satisfactory and within range. I know i probably have low oestrogen but my gp doesn't understand much about hrt. She can't advise me so i'm seeing a gynae in a couple of weeks so hopefully they can do some more tests and see what i'm lacking in.

Charlie62, i also have just come off Evoral Conti for the same reason, my hair had thinned already to almost bald patches, not sure why, could be stress, but i have  had thyroid tests, all ok
I have blood tests every 3 weeks, for iron and ferritin, as i have Haemochromatosis, which is supposed to be iron overload, so that should be ok
Since i have been on Evoral Conti ,[only 4 weeks] my hair has drastically fallen out, EC is one of the worst for hair loss,as the progesterone is very harsh, and i have read about a few women who have suffered on it, it is on the list of side effects too
If you put hair loss into the search box you can read about them
My Dr has given me some steroid lotion, as it helps hair to regrow
I first read about it on Gransnet ,ladies who had been prescribed it by their Drs and it was successful
If you go on GN search the same
A few ladies have said since they have been using vagifem the same has happened to them even when on no other HRT. but others say no, because it is such a small amount of HRT
I am taking high doses of Biotin, and zinc, and B12 and other b vits
The hair i still have has grown so much i have had it cut twice it seems to grow overnight, i have also heard about onion juice, but not tried it

Please will you update when you have seen your gynae,

Thanks for your reply jaycee. I will check out gransnet. What hrt are you taking instead of everol conti? I am using vagifem now & again as i was reducing the hrt patches but my hair was thinning before i started it so im not sure that had any effect. The biotin is 30 (not sure of what amount type, i dont think its mg) in a menopause support multivitamin. what amount are you taking & do you think its that or the steroid lotion thats helping with the hair loss?
I will update after my appt.

Hi Charli62, i have been to my Drs this morning , i have gone back onto Livial [Tibilone]
I don't think the steroid lotion has done anything ,Dr says he doesn't think it has made any difference, but then again i have lost more since he saw me last,so even it was working, what i have lost since will probably have cancelled it out
I asked him about my Vit D levels and B12, he said  they all seem fine BUT i am short on folic acid
One of my sons is taking folic acid, and he says his hair is like steel, it is growing quickly
The Biotin i am taking is 1000 ug a day,not sure what that means, .but i have heard that some people take much more
I took Livial a few years ago, and it didn't affect my hair, and i have seen a few people say their hair has thickened on it, but then everyone is different,
My daughter was on Livial for a while and said her hair thickened on it, but if i get any more hair loss i will just stop all HRT
I am interested to see what your Gynae had to say,
Dr said not to use any more steroid lotion after i finish this bottle,as too much can harm the scalp, but my scalp was slightly inflamed and that has cleared
He said isn't much choice of patches as very few are now available, but any amount of tablets
So back to the drawing board,
My hair was falling out before the EC but they have just made it worse
I did have a very stressful last year, and fairly stressful yea before that, and if the original cause is stressrelated it is likely to grow back,  but will just have to wait and hope
Also when i first started the EC they gave me the runs for 2 whole days, from morning til night, and a few times after that
How long have you been taking them, apologies if you said, can't remember reading
