Hi all,
Haven't been here in a long while. Hope eveyone is doing well. I just wondered if anyone knows about the implication of taking HRT and clotting after tooth extraction. I've read increased oestrogen affects the healing process and increases the chance of dry socket. I reduced my patch to half bt not sure how long to do this for, or if it is necessary. My headaches have increased and my stomach is unsettled, so I'd rather not sray on this regime for too long. Any one know anything about this? Thanks all

Nope.  I would ring my Dentist and ask the question.  I know when I had extraction which took 3 dentists on two separate occasions, I couldn't have a top of LA due to the medication I was taking but I don't take HRT.  So the question should be asked.

So without a top up of LA

I'm not sure quite what your question is? Do you mean that you are worried you won't clot or that you will clot? Sorry to be a bit thick!

I've been on HRT for 12 years and have never had any problems with dental work.

Its harder to clot apparently with increased oestrogen. I'm sure I'm over thinking it, but everything hurts 3 days on and I am getting concerned

I'm not sure that it is less likely to clot as the reason you have to stop HRT before major surgery is because it increases the clotting risk which is also why DVTs are more common when on HRT.

Are you on antibiotics following the extraction? If not you could have an infection in the gum. What advice were you given?

Did you not discuss this prior to intervention  . Give your dental surgery a ring in the morning?  In the meantime, if you have indeed had an extraction  try not to bend forwards!  If by now you aren't bleeding a lot, i.e. pouring with no clotting at all, I wouldn't be too worried.  But your Dentist should have discussed what drugs you are taking ......... mine updates me every visit, which is usually 6-7 months apart.

I didn't even think about HRT when I had it out. I'm day 3 days post extraction of a root canal molar which was quite hard to get out. I'm hoping the discomfort I feel is just due to all the bruising rather than an infection or dry socket. It's not agonising, just very uncomfortable. I was on antibiotics prior to the extraction to get rid of the infection but they finished 9 days ago.

You have had AB cover so I can't envisage problems other than 'natural' bleeding.  If the pain isn't acute it isn't dry socket.

Has the bleeding eased at all today ?

Dry socket is usually caused by rinsing the mouth too soon so the blood clot is washed away. Are you bleeding still? I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks all.

I had a bad night with severe flashes of pain and again this morning. Seems to have settled now and only some sharp twinges, now and then. Don't know what's causing it. My mouth generally is less sore so it's a mystery. I didn't bleed very much after the extraction, bit down on gauze as suggested. I didn't rinse for 24 hours but am doing so gently after evey meal with salt water. Adjacent tooth hurts so maybe its been unsettled. Dry socket would be a continous pain I'm guessing?

There is no doubt about dry socket!

There are a lot of nerves along the jaw lines.  Bruising can cause stinging etc..  Take pain relief and rest.

I've just had very major surgery, I was ok to stay on my patch, however they said they ask people to stop hrt pills. But mine was a big big op.

I had to stop my patches for one month before my major surgery to help avoid blood clots.

I just had my gallbladder out under general anaesthetic and was not told to stop at all, so I guess for a tooth you should be okay to continue as you'll only be immobile for maybe an hour
