Chills instead of hot flushes a new "trend"
« on: January 11, 2019, 06:02:46 PM »

Hi,

I am in very late peri, nearly 49y, not (yet) on HRT, periods many months apart (if ever again), and have likely generally low estrogen by now (but probably fluctuating still at times). I have had many symptoms but since a few weeks ago, hot flushes and night sweats receded, sleep has amazingly improved (for now). Hot flushes are now "replaced" by chills, and muscles sometimes are like "jelly" when I walk or run - running is real "fun" at times. I wonder whether I am approaching menopause now and hormone generation has "packed in" completely at times? Also had some what seem like cortisol surges, but they are less frequent now thankfully. Had thyroid, vitamin D and iron tested earlier in 2018, all fine at the time but thyroid may make sense to retest. Has anyone noticed a switch of symptoms when approaching the menopause such as being really cold intolerant at times only to switch back to "normal", and then post meno to the symptoms they had during the peri phase? Thanks. AG

Hi AG
Yep, symptoms changed all the time, one minute quite hot, then couple hours later freezing.
I was cold intolerant for a while, it would make me literally shiver, felt like I needed a duvet and hot water bottle with me everywhere I went. I hated it, then the anxiety would give me the jitters, so I was really uncomfortable a lot of the time.
My worst was when I went up for my shower at night time, I'd literally shake on the side of the bed, as I took my pjs off, (only sleep in my knickers and vest top)even though it wasn't cold in the bedroom. Horrible.
So yeah, they do mix up a bit, hormones like to keep us on our toes...... :cuss: things!

Hi ag and jilly. Yes. Covers on  covers off.
Ag, I know you said you had blood test but I had the jelly leg thing and thought it was due to getting over my op but consultant blood test showed quite incidentally that my b12 and folic acid were very low. She prescribed supplements and they helped. When the 3 month dose ran out the symptoms came back somewhat so she restarted me on the b12.
Don't know if that helps it might be a completely different cause but just thought I'd throw in my two penneth in the hope it might.
Wish you well and good on you for keeping fit, (hides face in shame and vows to get back to it myself)😀

When I had tamoxifen within 36 hours I felt like I had 'flu!  HORMONES  >:(.  It would start across the back of my shoulders below the nape and ripple down to my waist  :-\ ending with a huge shiver, like a dog shaking off water.

It's weird because since hrt it has gone from hot flushes to hot and then chills. Putting on another layer of clothes in bed; teeth chattering and then stripping off again 10 minutes later.
Oh what fun. Not!!

Thanks for all the replies and mentioning vit B12 as well. I have been taking Menopace regularly, and a low dose of magnesium which also contains B vitamins. For some reason Menopace was fine for a couple of months to take but now I feel odd when taking it and now only take it sparingly. Chills can be bad one day and then out of the blue disappear the next (similar temperature in and outside).

Hi, yes, this is some of the best time of my life I can safely say! Glad that for whatever reason I have been a lot better in the last few days but no idea why, that is the crazy thing, it is just so random. AG

AG. random is the word. I feel like screaming to everyone I know  "if I felt well I wouldn't be even giving all this stuff a second thought. Do you think I want to feel like this?
. It annoys the heck out of me that people think we are "dwelling on It'". Or convincing ourselves that something is wrong.
I didn't have health anxiety until my health caused me to be anxious.
Gp Said to me I think you are anxious about your menopause.
I said no I'm not im anxious BECAUSE of menopause.
She said " I think I worded it wrong"

I could have written this myself. I am post menopause I think and tend to go through concentrated times of hot flushes (eg, several a day across several weeks if not 2-3 months plus occasional utterly drenching night sweats) then they improve.  But for the first time I'm now experiencing these chilled effects down both arms - just in the upper part of my arm and has been going on for about a month.  Some days a bit better than others and I keep trying to link it to temperature as I have bad circulation but even on the milder days I seem to get it. I'm also a very low ferritin person so think I will maybe ask for some bloods to see if it's ferritin or Vit D as had both of those low in the past and felt rubbish. I feel more tired and low than I have ever felt before.  I'm guessing it's being caused by final oestrogen levels maybe I don't know if not due to something else but it's really tedious and I want it to pass  :-\
